Reviewer:Elliot J Roth, MD(Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago)
Description:This book is written for people with brain injury by someone who has been through it. It provides personal insights, useful information, and practical suggestions for people with brain injuries and their families.
Purpose:The intent is to provide persons with brain injury "an articulate interpretation of their experiences," and for the author to share the knowledge and insights that she gained during her recovery from brain injury. She offers the book "as a way of understanding the depth and breadth of the road ahead for everyone involved in the process of recovery."
Audience:This book is specifically directed at persons with brain injury and their families. As a survivor of a brain injury, the author provides valuable insights.
Features:The author addresses the many personal, family, social, and lifestyle issues that arise after brain injury, cognitive functioning, emotional responses, and some of the more technical medical issues. The most useful sections of the book are the personal insights and suggestions for how to deal with seemingly minor (but often important and impactful) situations that arise in day-to-day activities. These sections are the strongest. Medical issues are handled adequately, but not as well as the social and practical daily activities.
Assessment:Several books have been written by persons with brain injury about their experiences dealing with it. This one does a good job of providing personal insights in an accessible, understandable, and practical way.
