Book Synopsis

A Biographical Handbook of Hispanics and United States Film provides the most complete biographic and filmographic record currently available on the participation of Hispanics in the United States film industry. Gary D. Keller has collected biographical information on hundreds of Hispanic actors, directors, cinematographers, screenwriters, producers, animators, and other film professionals who have participated in United States film from its beginnings in 1894 through the contemporary period, as well as filmographic information on the thousands of films in which they have been involved. The biographical data include all available information - full given names and stage names, vital dates, place of birth, films in which the individual participated, and awards and other recognition.

Library Journal

In this companion volume to his Hispanics and United States Film: An Overview and Handbook (LJ 12/94), Keller (regents professor, Univ. of Arizona) focuses on biography and filmography, including entries for actors, directors, and cinematographers active in the U.S. film industry from its beginnings to the present. The many Spanish-language films that have been made here are covered, but because the focus is U.S. films, one finds only very brief entries for some major foreign stars, e.g., the Mexican actor Cantinflas, whose career played out primarily in Mexico. Keller pays attention to the requirements of written Spanish, avoiding what he refers to as the "crimes against Spanish orthography" seen in other such works. The result is a high-quality reference tool that allows even those fluent in Spanish to concentrate on the information rather than on spelling. Keller plans future editions that will include additional performers and incorporate any needed corrections and revisions. Recommended for libraries owning the previous volume and for all film collections needing hard-to-find reference information.James E. Ross, WLN, Seattle
