Reviewer:William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This review of the behavioral sciences is one in a series of books designed to prepare medical students for the USLME Step 1. Essentially a study guide, the book is composed of 500 questions paralleling in format and degree of difficulty questions found on the USMLE Step 1 exam.
Purpose:The purpose is to give medical students a comprehensive and convenient assessment and review of their knowledge of behavioral science. These are worthwhile objectives, as behavioral science is one of the fastest changing fields of medicine.
Audience:The book is specifically written for medical students preparing for Step 1 of the USMLE. However, physicians preparing for Step 3 of the USMLE or even practicing clinicians wishing to brush up on their psychiatric knowledge will find it useful.
Features:This book is composed of 500 questions, broken down into various chapters by subject matter. Each question is accompanied by an answer, a paragraph explaining the answer, and references to appropriate textbooks or journal articles. The content of each of subjects is quite extensive, and the questions and references are up-to-date. A thorough index is provided at the end for those students looking for a specific topic to review.
Assessment:There are numerous study guides available to medical students preparing for the various steps of the USMLE. The Pre-Test series has always been one of the better study guides, and this new behavioral science edition is no exception. Its thoroughness and pertinent references should more than suffice to adequately prepare any student for behavioral science questions on the USMLE Step 1. In addition, practicing psychiatrists may find it useful as a means to hone their skills in this rapidly changing field.
