MARY NILES MAACK is Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, UCLA.
JOANNE PASSET is Assistant Professor, School of Library and Information Science, American Studies, and Women's Studies, Indiana University.
The first book to focus on the aspirations and career development of female library-school faculty as well as a thorough review of obstacles and the importance of the mentoring process.
The literature on mentoring is a growing one; this well-written and solidly researched volume is an excellent addition. Maack and Passet, on the library school faculties at UCLA and Indiana University, respectively, examine the careers of women library educators in three cohorts, defined by the years they had received their bachelor's degree: prior to 1956, 1956-65, and after 1965. The authors thoroughly describe their two-part methodology of data collection, which included focus groups and open-ended telephone interviews. The interview instrument is included, as are other illustrative materials such as charts, personal essays, and an extensive bibliography. The five essays by educators such as Toni Carbo Bearman and Jane Robbins were originally presented as papers at the 1990 ALISE (Association for Library and Information Science Education) annual conference and add a welcome personal touch. Highly recommended for research collections in women's studies or library science.-Nancy Magnuson, Goucher Coll., Baltimore
