Omnigraphics' Health Reference Series is designed for the general reader seeking guidance on how to avoid serious illness by following preventive lifestyles and recognizing early warning signs. It also supports the layperson who has received a diagnosis of a serious disease or disorder as well as the family member or nonprofessional caregiver who must learn to care and to cope with the illness. Each volume in the series deals comprehensively with a particular area of medical concern and contains material found in publications issued by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies and associations. Nowhere else can general readers find this information conveniently collected, coordinated, and indexed in book form.
About 46 million adults in the United States experience joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation associated with arthritis and related rheumatic diseases. These physical symptoms can interfere with activities of daily life, school, and employment, whereas the fatigue and emotional consequences of the disease can negatively impact relationships and mental well-being. The good news is that medications, surgery, appropriate physical exercise, proper nutrition, and complementary and alternative therapies often offer pain and symptom relief. Although a cure remains elusive, these types of care strategies enable many people to experience significant improvements in daily functioning and overall quality of life.
Arthritis Sourcebook, Third Edition provides updated information about diagnosing, treating, and managing degenerative, inflammatory, and other specific forms of arthritis. It also explains the symptoms and treatments of related diseases that affect the joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles. Details about currently used medical, surgical, and self-care management strategies are included along with tips for reducing joint pain and inflammation and managing arthritis-related disability. The book concludes with a glossary of terms and directory of resources for additional help and information.

Description:This comprehensive reference provides descriptions and explanations of many arthritis diseases for the lay person.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide updated information on all things arthritis for the general population, including prevention and treatment options. Although this book is not the only option for accessing this information, it certainly has compiled a great deal of knowledge in one place.
Audience:The language and information provided is spot on target for the intended audience of lay readers.
Features:This is meant to provide information on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of multiple forms of degenerative and inflammatory arthritis and other autoimmune disorders. It meshes both rheumatologic and orthopedic information as well as general living and well-being topics for the general population. Assessment:This is a decent compendium for the lay audience to search for information about arthritis. It is a useful starting place for patients or their family members to obtain basic information. It is the only reference that I am aware that covers all things arthritis for the general population.
