Kathie M. Josephs - Children's Literature

This book is part of the "Classic Starts Collection" and is abridged for easier reading. What a heartwarming story about a young girl called Anne and how she is brought home to Green Gables. The family's first reaction when they see her is that she is a girl and not a boy. Anne has a spunky and stubborn personality, yet is fun loving, kind, and full of life. She wants to experience everything life has to offer. A few of her adventures include: being accused of stealing a brooch, attending a picnic and tasting ice cream for the first time, being is a school play, and dying her bright red hair green. There is never a dull moment at Green Gables after Anne arrives and the family ends up wondering how they could ever have wanted a boy. What is so terrific about this series is that young readers and reluctant readers can now enjoy reading a classic that they may not have been able to accomplish at a younger age. This is an excellent book to use in classroom literary circles. There are many events that lend themselves to classroom discussions and promote excellent writing prompts. The author has thoughtfully included 10 questions at the end of the book to pique the reader's interest in looking at the story in a different light. The story itself is filled with enchantment, excitement, and will definitely become a favorite in any library. 2005, Sterling Publishing Company, Ages 8 to 11.
