Author Biography: Iris Johansen

While Iris Johansen's style has evolved over the years, the same skill that made her "one of the leading authors of romance fiction" (Barbara Kemp) has helped establish her reputation in a broader field. As Catherine Coulter noted, "Iris Johansen is a bestselling author for the best reason -- she's a wonderful storyteller."

Book Synopsis

She expected sunshine and balmy breezes. What she saw was everyone's worst nightmare.

Bess Grady has heard the unmistakable sound before. She knows what it means. But not even the eerie lament of the howling dogs can prepare her for what has taken place in the small village.

Library Journal

Photojournalist Bess Grady goes to Tenajo, Mexico, with her sister to photograph the reportedly beautiful scenery there for a travel piece. What they find is a village full of dead people; only a baby girl remains alive. A detachment of soldiers arrives on the scene, and with no time to react Bess is knocked unconscious. When she wakes, her sister is dead, and she is a prisoner in a Mexican hospital. Johansen, abandoning the lush narrative style she used so effectively in her historical novels (e.g., Dark Rider, Bantam, 1995) opts for a leaner, faster-paced prose that she uses to enhance the thriller-like atmosphere here.romance and enough twists and turns to gladden the hearts of all of her readers.
