Peggy Parish wrote many popular books for children, several featuring her most famous character, Amelia Bedelia, who first appeared in 1963. Peggy Parish died in November 1988.
Amelia Bedelia has her hands full when she takes care of Mrs. Lane's baby. As usual, the literal-minded housekeeper mixes things up, but she also wins the heart of her newest and youngest fan.
In this "I Can Read, Level 2" adventure, the well-meaning but confused and literal Ameila Bedelia takes a job babysitting. In addition to some confusion over bottles and cans, Amelia Bedelia reads the mother's list and when it says playtime, Amelia Bedelia plays; when it says be sure to wear the bib, Amelia Bedelia does. But when it says to prepare the baby's dinner, she does it just right: little bitty burgers, little bits of potatoes, little bits of tomatoes and ketchup on the whole thing. The appalled parents are about to fire Amelia Bedelia when the baby affectionately reaches out to her. That, plus the strawberry tarts she has baked save her joband the day. Children can enjoy the book and the character their parents loved when they were in elementary school. It is all good fun and the reader is surely in on the jokes. 2004 (orig. 1981), Greenwillow, Ages 5 to 8.
