Author Biography: Richard Trahair

Trahair, Richard

Book Synopsis

Every year more than half a million people around the world undergo hip replacement. This book records the experiences of the author and thirteen other patients who have had the operation. They talk about their troubles with the old hips, reaching the difficult decision to have the operation, the strenuous process of finding appropriate surgeons and hospitals, and their preparations for the operation. Richard Trahair, an author and psychologist who has recently had hip replacement himself, weaves these people's hopes and concerns with professional advice from surgeons, rheumatologists, physiotherapists, nurses, and occupational therapists to provide a full, informed picture of the operation from several different viewpoints.

Riad Barmada

This book describes the experiences of 14 patients who underwent hip replacement. The intended purpose is to help patients who need total hip replacement understand the experience they will be subjected to prior, during, and after the procedure. Obviously, patients with hip disorders are targeted. The book contains stories about the experience of each of the 14 patients interviewed. Since hip replacement is a surgical procedure indicated for many types of hip disorders, the information each patient needs could be different in many regards and the surgeon is the only person who can provide the necessary information. Usually, information is provided by small brochures. These should be supplemented by more specific instructions provided by the surgeon; in that way it is custom-made for each patient.
