Author Biography: John Steckley

Book Synopsis

Steckly (Humber College) analyzes 77 texts used in introductory sociology courses at Canadian community colleges and universities—both electives in general education packages and mandatory service courses in programs such as nursing—for content related to Aboriginal peoples. He finds many gaps, though the texts provide the only formal information that many students will ever receive about these cultures. Steckly, a scholar of the Huron, Mohawk, and Ojibwa peoples, provides a framework for sociology professors; for textbook writers, editors, and publishers; and for students themselves to think about what may be missing from their texts.
