Book Synopsis

After seventeen-year-old Thais Allard loses her widowed father in a tragic car accident, she is forced to leave the only home she's ever known to live with a total stranger in New Orleans. New Orleans greets Thais with many secrets and mysteries, but none as unbelievable as the moment she comes face to face with the impossible -- an identical twin, Clio. Thais soon learns that she and the twin she never knew come from a family of witches, that she possesses astonishing powers, and that she, along with Clio, has a key role in Balefire, the coven she was born into. Fiery Clio is less than thrilled to have to share the spotlight, but the twins must learn to combine their powers in order to complete a rite that will transform their lives and the coven forever.

Children's Literature

In the third book of the "Balefire" series, twin witches Clio and Thais are still dealing with the idea of a rite that could make them immortal. Meanwhile, Clio is struggling on her own against the temptation of the dark arts. She only wants to be able to protect herself and Thais, but the seductive power is hard to resist. The coven the girls are associating with, the Treize, is keeping many secrets, including who might be trying to kill the twins, and the girls set out to find answers. A spell to get answers works, but almost kills the girls in the process. In this shocking addition to the series, many questions are answered from previous books, but more arise. What will the final outcome of the rite truly be? Tiernan's penultimate book in the "Balefire" series will please readers already entrenched in the characters' lives. New readers to the series might be confused by the large number of characters and viewpoints, but that shouldn't dissuade them from reading this book.
