Vampires, werewolves, evil fairies-all the usual suspects line up in this horror-star-studded collection of stories created to creep readers out. The quality in these eighteen stories (three sections of six each-get it?) is a bit uneven as with all collections of this size. Jane Mason's story of a girl whose life is erased after a dip in the lake and Peter Abrahams' tale of an evil television channel are silly. Ellen Schreiber's first-person narrator turns out to be a ghost breaking the narrative rules for no good reason and to lame effect. But Bentley Little's slam book that can change reality is a fun revenge story. Sarah Hines Stephens's and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes's different angles on the were-beast are interesting and creepy in their own ways. Chet Williamson's and T. E. D. Klein's stories are delightfully eerie, and Melissa de la Cruz's vampire-in-need-of-help story will satisfy the (budding) paranormal romance crowd. The cover alone, featuring a beast with blood-red fangs, will have this book flying off the shelves. Even if horror-seekers are not completely satisfied with every entry, they will surely find something here to keep them up nights.
