In The Vanderbilts, the family's astounding story is told in full: from the farmstead beginnings of the Commodore on Staten Island to the pinnacle of wealth, fame, and social standing achieved by the legendary Vanderbilt ladies-Consuelo, Alva, Grace, Gertrude, and Gloria. The text traces the commercial machinations that established their fortune and the Vanderbilt mania for house building that engaged some of America's finest designers and architects.

Oh my... what a beautiful book! The color photographs of the estates, family members and artwork were compelling! This could easily just be a 'coffee table book', however, it is also packed with detailed information about the Vanderbilt's and the oppulent life-styles they lived! I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the Victorian era, whether it be the industrial age, the clothing, the architecture or life-style, or the Vanderbilt's themselves! This book also offers a family tree for various branches of the family over 100-150 years, which was beneficial while reading, because there were so many cousins through multiple generations, it was difficult to keep track of everyone! A book you can curl-up with on a cold evening, and get lost in an era of opulence we can only dream of today!

After a visit to Biltmore, I wanted to know more about George Vanderbilt and was disappointed in the brevity of that specific information. in fairness, the book is about the whole clan. Even then it is a little dry and lacking in personal information or color.

A very good book for anyone interested in the Vanderbilt's. It is a compelling story of the progression of success by one of the most prominent American families. There are many members that have stayed within the family circle and others who have gone out on their own. There is a great deal of information but is a very easy read. This book arrived in very good condition. It was inexpensive and very well worth it. It arrived very quickly. I a very happy with Seller.

I had been to the Biltmore in 1989 and since that time I have read quite a few books on the subject & including the rest of the family's mansions. In this particular book the printing is a little larger than what I'm used to and it's perfect for a 68 year old person. I started reading it right away and never want to put it down...but you have to fall asleep at some point. Being a night owl I have to stop when the book hits me in the face as it's falling forward. Wonderful author, very knowledgeable.

A very tops of the waves overview of the Vanderbilt family. I thought at first it was the abridged version but I'm afraid that's all there is with this lean volume.
