I cannot think of a single novel or movie that made me bawl my eyes out like A Thousand Tomorrows did with the exception of Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life. The first novel is a beautiful story about love between a man consumed by rage and hatred and a woman whose days are numbered because of a deadly disease. The second book, Just Beyond the Clouds, is a continuation of the story of the male protagonist of the first book, Cody Gunner, with more focus on his brother with Down Syndrome. Both books explore the recurring theme of the pursuit of happiness at the risk of life threatening dangers and the conundrum, whether or not those saddled with a disease or condition that renders the lifestyles that healthy people are entitled to impossible for them to have should be insulated from any potential danger and live the rest of their shortened lives without pursuing their dreams. The first book also deals with sacrifice and forgiveness while its sequel focuses on hope and faith. Though Cody has a personality strong enough to carry a two book series, for me, his first love, Ali, was the heart of these stories even when she was absent. Even now when I think of her, I can feel tears stinging my eyes. I have never read any fictional character who has had this effect on me before. Thank you, Ms. Kingsbury, for creating this beautiful character I will never forget and telling the stories that have moved and inspired us.

I think this series is more fitting for a younger generation audience – I'm 66 yrs of age. Although I enjoyed all of the insights regarding challenges that families with Down's Syndrome babies/ children / adults have had to endure since forever...but how the stigmas can be overcome by acceptance for the often misunderstood thinking that D. S. babies should never be brought into this world.
Nothing could be further from the truth!!! They have so much to teach us about innocence in human nature, boundless love and acceptance to give to those who take the time to help them be the best person they can be, and that they too know the meaning of true love.
This story also gives great insights into the many struggles people everywhere, throughout society, deal with when they have what looks normal on the surface, but is hidden inside the body when they suffer with illnesses like, Cystic Fibrosis, M.S., and the list goes on. All the more reason to be more kind, loving, and helpful to people all around us on any given day, bc we know not what they may be dealing with unless we walk a mile in their shoes.
The heart of this book series has all of the above woven throughout, giving anyone who reads it the messages of faith, hope, and love...the greatest being LOVE. ♡♡♡

Wow, what an incredible story. I love the concept of this story and how it showed forgiveness. Forgiveness is something we don't want to do sometimes, but like it said in the book, life is too short to hate. Ali showed Cody how to love, but, most importantly, she showed him how to forgive and not let anger consume him. True forgiveness will set us free and give us the peace we most desperately need. I'm glad Cody forgave his dad. It was the right thing to do.
