Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022) was a Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Master, poet, and peace activist and one of the most revered and influential spiritual teachers in the world. Born in 1926, he became a Zen Buddhist monk at the age of sixteen. His work for peace and reconciliation during the war in Vietnam moved Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. In Vietnam, Thich Nhat Hanh founded Van Hanh Buddhist University and the School of Youth for Social Service, a corps of Buddhist peace workers. Exiled as a result of his work for peace, he continued his humanitarian efforts, rescuing boat people and helping to resettle refugees. In 1982 he established Plum Village France, the largest Buddhist monastery in Europe and the hub of the international Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism. Over seven decades of teaching, he published a hundred books, which have been translated into more than forty languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.

This is a great book which describes a way of living. It is written in an entertaining, yet educational style. As best I can define it, it outlines a simple philosophical perspective which enables one to better enjoy life. But the use of the word "simple" is somewhat deceiving. While the perspective is simple and easy to apply, it is not so easy to apply it on a day to day basis. The mindfulness verses are designed to be helpers in this regard.

Who will like this book?

If you are into eastern religion (specifically Buddhism) you will like it, as it is a real life implementation of "enlightenment" on a daily basis. If you are not into eastern religion, I think that you will like it just as well, as it is a practical day-to-day guide for "happiness".

If you are interested in alternate world views, you might like this book.

If you are a technophile, you will be interested in this book as an intellectual exercise.

Who will not like this book?

If you are freaked out be non-Western religious thought, then you may not like this book. While it is not "religious" per se, those who are firmly tied to Western religious tradition and cannot view this as a philosophical exercise, might find it difficult to let go.

If you are not from a tradition of liberal thinking which enjoys going beyond normal boundaries of American culture, then this book may not be for you.

Overall, I thought it was a great book for me.

Simple, not a bulky book that can be taken anywhere, and easy to understand Gathas that anyone can use. I like the fact that I can just open up the book to a specific Gatha like “washing my hands” and practice while I’m actually washing. I like that there is a Gatha for most everyday tasks.

How can you go wrong with Thich Nhat Hanh. He puts things so simple that my heart can really understand versus being purely intellectual. These verses and commentary have the capacity to enliven your mindfulness and gently remind you to try to cultivate gratitude and compassion in a very concrete day to day way. The sacred smashed into the mundane in this book.

Typical Thich. Simple clear approaches to everyday issues. Take it at surface level or use it more deeply to explore the important inner meanings of these wonderful thoughts. Even if you don't like it, it won't harm you.

This is a wonderful book with meditations to get through the day with mindfulness and awareness and I can add nothing to what many of the other reviews have previously said. I have had the paperback for a while and was happy to see the book on Kindle. Though of great value, the Kindle version is the older edition and one verse I particularly like from the 2nd edition is not in the original: 42: Turning On the Computer. I highly recommend either edition.

Thich Nhat Hanh is so spot on! This is an excellent offering in deepening the practice of being present in the moment and he presents numerous situational examples with clear and down to earth eloquence. A lovely read; thought provoking, beautifully written and rich.
