About the Author

Thich Nhat Hanh was a world-renowned spiritual teacher and peace activist. Born in Vietnam in 1926, he became a Zen Buddhist monk at the age of sixteen. Over seven decades of teaching, he published more than 100 books, which have sold more than four million copies in the United States alone. Exiled from Vietnam in 1966 for promoting peace, his teachings on Buddhism as a path to social and political transformation are responsible for bringing the mindfulness movement to Western culture. He established the international Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism in France, now the largest Buddhist monastery in Europe and the heart of a growing community of mindfulness practice centers around the world. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 95 at his root temple, Tu Hieu, in Hue, Vietnam.

I love all of Thich Nhat Hanh's work and have found wisdom and compassion in each of his books. This little volume (based on a talk given at a prison) seems to me to contain the essence of his message of mindful compassion in such a direct manner. I have already bought several copies because I keep giving them away, to people from all different backgrounds and with widely varying interests. All have found something to treasure in these pages.

The concept that freedom may be cultivated by anyone, anywhere, and under any circumstances is profound. Offered by someone else, it could feel reductive and dismissive, and coming from a position of privilege. Coming from someone who experienced war and many of the ravages of the 20th century, this core teaching is liberating. TNH never forgot the political implications of philosophy and lived experiences of humanity, and perhaps that's partly why his gentle and powerful compassion is so enduring. I hope everyone will read this book and be open to its teachings.

First, I want to comment on the size of this book. It's pretty small but holds up well - I carry it in the front pocket of my backpack every day. It isn't flimsy, either, and so far it's lasted two-ish years.

Anyway, I'm a student in University and I read this whenever I'm having a stressful day or if I have time to kill between classes. I especially take time and read this before exams. Nothing puts me more at ease than reading this book and it helps me remember to take every opportunity and perform every task with mindfulness. Fantastic text.

As a former prison chaplain and in correspondence with many individuals facing imminent killings on death rows, I found this volume profoundly relevant. As a breathing human being, I found it personally invaluable in reminding me of the ease with which we all can access the Dharma through something as basic as mindful breathing…Rest in love, Thay - and thank you for this!

This small book contains a talk given by Hahn to inmates at a prison. Someone asked him to speak about forgiveness. I have gone back again and again to that specific passage in order to change my view and limited capacity for forgiveness.

I have been a fan of Thich Naht Hanh for quite some time and where some books I find don't get to the core of what I like to practice, I find this one really shows that you find peace even if you are locked up in a cell. It shows that even those who were once lost and now are paying for the crimes they commit can overcome them while finding peace in their heart. This peace can be spread to others over time when you find that peace yourself. This was a really touching book, knowing that it was said to many prisoners gives the titles a whole new deeper meaning. Be free where you are.

Great book, would recommend to anyone. I have read a lot of Thich Nhat Hanh before so it was a very short read. It would be a nice introduction to what he's about and the lifestyle he promotes for anyone who hasn't read any of his other books. I like it because it is more concise than his other stuff in which he tends to get repetitive. This way you can re-read the book many times and be reminded of the core ideas and tips for living mindfully.

After spending the last three months travelling around the world and the last couple years trying to decide where to live, this book was inspiring. It has encouraged me to focus more on mindfulness meditation and develop the freedom one can have anywhere through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Stop!

Speaking as someone who began meditation from books alone, with no group support for years, I disagree with S. Olsen: if you have sufficient interest and determination you will not stop; and if you don't, then not even a group will keep you at it (which is not to deny that group support is preferable). Once you really begin to experience the fruits of meditation, nothing will stop you, with or without group support.

Secondly, none of the several books of T.N.H's that I have read say you will stop meditating after 3 months if you have no group to practise with, although they do emphasize the benefits and importance of belonging to a group.

As to not buying any of T.N.H's books unless you have a group for support and direction, I would say that for those who do not have the benefit of a group, it is even more important and beneficial to read the books, which are a tremendous source of support and direction, read slowly and mindfully. You will find yourself returning to them again and again as a rich and inexhaustible source of wisdom and inspiration and down-to-earth practical advice. Of the hundreds of books on Buddhist meditation I have read over several decades, in my opinion none are more valuable for those working alone to develop meditation and mindful living than those of Thich Nhat Hanh. He is a true Bhodisattva.

Finally, I would urge anyone wanting to develop meditation and taste its fruits to sit a retreat led by an experienced bona vide teacher. There are many to choose from these days without going too far from home (including Thich Nhat Hanh). A retreat gives an invaluable kick-start to one's practice (as well as providing great contacts for on-going support). To mention 2 UK centres offering regular retreats teaching genuine mindfulness/vipassana practice: Amaravati Buddhist Monastery (and its affiliated centres), and Gaia House in Devon. Both are well worth a visit (or several).
