About the author
Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022) was a Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Master, poet, and peace activist and one of the most revered and influential spiritual teachers in the world. Born in 1926, he became a Zen Buddhist monk at the age of sixteen. His work for peace and reconciliation during the war in Vietnam moved Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. In Vietnam, Thich Nhat Hanh founded Van Hanh Buddhist University and the School of Youth for Social Service, a corps of Buddhist peace workers. Exiled as a result of his work for peace, he continued his humanitarian efforts, rescuing boat people and helping to resettle refugees. In 1982 he established Plum Village France, the largest Buddhist monastery in Europe and the hub of the international Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism. Over seven decades of teaching, he published a hundred books, which have been translated into more than forty languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.

The concept that freedom may be cultivated by anyone, anywhere, and under any circumstances is profound. Offered by someone else, it could feel reductive and dismissive, and coming from a position of privilege. Coming from someone who experienced war and many of the ravages of the 20th century, this core teaching is liberating. TNH never forgot the political implications of philosophy and lived experiences of humanity, and perhaps that's partly why his gentle and powerful compassion is so enduring. I hope everyone will read this book and be open to its teachings.
Anyway, I'm a student in University and I read this whenever I'm having a stressful day or if I have time to kill between classes. I especially take time and read this before exams. Nothing puts me more at ease than reading this book and it helps me remember to take every opportunity and perform every task with mindfulness. Fantastic text.

Secondly, none of the several books of T.N.H's that I have read say you will stop meditating after 3 months if you have no group to practise with, although they do emphasize the benefits and importance of belonging to a group.
As to not buying any of T.N.H's books unless you have a group for support and direction, I would say that for those who do not have the benefit of a group, it is even more important and beneficial to read the books, which are a tremendous source of support and direction, read slowly and mindfully. You will find yourself returning to them again and again as a rich and inexhaustible source of wisdom and inspiration and down-to-earth practical advice. Of the hundreds of books on Buddhist meditation I have read over several decades, in my opinion none are more valuable for those working alone to develop meditation and mindful living than those of Thich Nhat Hanh. He is a true Bhodisattva.
Finally, I would urge anyone wanting to develop meditation and taste its fruits to sit a retreat led by an experienced bona vide teacher. There are many to choose from these days without going too far from home (including Thich Nhat Hanh). A retreat gives an invaluable kick-start to one's practice (as well as providing great contacts for on-going support). To mention 2 UK centres offering regular retreats teaching genuine mindfulness/vipassana practice: Amaravati Buddhist Monastery (and its affiliated centres), and Gaia House in Devon. Both are well worth a visit (or several).
