This novel is one of the best Sherlock Holmes pastiches I've read. I do hope Barrie Roberts' other Holmes stories will be republished as Kindle editions.

Done in the style of Sir Doyle with Watson as the narrator. No tricks or gimmicks. Faithful to the originals. I think is this was slipped into 'The Complete Sherlock Holmes' it would blend in beautifully. Set in the times and places of Doyle's tales, it was a satisfying read. Everything about this adventure rang true. And of course, an interesting tale that held my interest.

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle carried a Holmes adventure to novel length, as in STUDY IN SCARLET, VALLEY OF FEAR, or SIGN OF FOUR, it was by including a nearly novel-length flashback giving background on key characters in the story. Barrie Roberts uses the same approach here. The main purpose of the flashbacks is to expose the gentle reader to the unspeakable horrors of the 19th Century British penal system, which transported individuals ranging from small children to decrepit elderly men, and all walks of life between, into a terrifying environment of constant menace, torture, torment and death in Australian penal colonies.

In this particular Holmes adventure, circumstances have very implausibly brought a relatively large number (I lost count) of survivors of the penal colonies into the same peaceful area of rural England. Murder, kidnapping, blackmail and extortion follow, in complex layers that Holmes must unravel. Highly recommended.

As if Doyle wrote it. I'm hooked on these Holmesian type of tales.Over the years I have read some that are so incredibly bad, it is a wonder someone published them ( I felt snookered for buying them). Some are very well done. Barrie Roberts falls into the latter group. He has it down right. No modern expressions (I read one pastiche that actually had Holmes saying "That is just so last season."). No modern causes to defend. Just pure Sherlock Holmes. It reminded me at times of "The Sign Of The Four."

A murder, ex-cons, corrupt officials, a penal colony, kidnapping, a mysterious millionaire and a secret society. It makes for a nice Holmes pastiche.

Excellent Holmes mystery written in a voice so similar to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's that any fan of the original will not fail to enjoy this new adventure.

I could have been reading Conan Doyle! It's well written with a great plot. My only complaint was I felt that the reading of the papers left by the first Lord Backwater dragged a bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent pastiche
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 17, 2019
This was an excellent Sherlock Holmes pastiche novel, with an authentic Conan Doyle. An aristocrat loved by the local people for his generosity to the poor is murdered. While the murder is initially blamed on local poachers, Holmes quickly deduces otherwise. The murder has its origin in events 40 years before in the horrors and oppression of Van Diemen's land (now Tasmania) to which convicts were transported, often for quite minor offences brought about by poverty-stricken and desperate lives. Flashbacks form around a quarter of the narrative as the reasons behind the events in the 1880s are coloured in, and the villain behind a series of murders exposed. Very good and quick read. 5/5

I bought this book thinking it was about Lucanus Pell The Man From Hell. But I have to admit it's a great story.

Good rendition of a story of Holmes of a calibre harking back to the original canon. Story length very adequate and I would recommend to all

I enjoyed the book immensely. Authentic and in Watson’s style. Believable characters and settings. For me excellent relating of Holmes’ skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good yarn

This is a great story, focusing in the past, for the solution to the mystery. Along the lines of, The Valley of Fear, The Boscombe Valley Mystery.
I do not like to give away plots and will not do so in this case. However this is one of the better books in this series. Fans of Sherlock Holmes may like this, as I did.
