Soldier 'I' - The story of an SAS Hero: From Mirbat to the Iranian Embassy Siege and beyond (General Military) Paperback – April 20, 2010

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 717 ratings

No publicity, no media. We move in silently, do our job, and melt away into the background. If you have the stamina, the willpower and the guts, we’ll welcome you with open arms and you one of us. And if you haven’t, then it’s been very nice knowing you.

Eighteen years in the SAS saw Pete Winner, codenamed Soldier ‘I’, survive the savage battle of Mirbat, parachute into the icy depths of the South Atlantic at the height of the Falklands War, and storm the Iranian Embassy during the most famous hostage crisis in the modern world.

For the first time Pete also details his close-protection work around the world, from the lawless streets of Moscow to escorting aid convoys into war-torn Bosnia. He also unveils the problems of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder faced by many Special Forces veterans, and how he battled his own demons to continue his roller-coaster career. This is his story, written with a breathtaking take-no-prisoners attitude that brings each death-defying episode vividly to life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Pete’s journey through life is not always going forward, nor always going backward, but filled with the ups and downs we all go through. It is a good commentary on dealing with the system and the pitfalls of bucking that system." www.mataka.org, June 2010

About the Author

Michael Paul Kennedy is the original author of the memoir. He acted as a ghost-writer, bringing the story of 'Soldier I' to life and at the same time preserving his anonymity.

There are numerous autobiographies and other books by former SAS Troopers now on the Market. Unlike most, this superbly written book covers the author's entire career and beyond. He candidly details not only the events of his career - highs and lows, in a way that leaves the reader knowing what it was like in a very personal way. The author goes beyond the events to discuss the personal inner wounds, the emotional/psychological wounds of warfare and losing brother soldiers in combat.

The final chapters offers a view of what life offers yesterday's warriors when the uniform is taken off for the last time. There, we see that kipling's "Tommy Atkins" rings all too true.

I highly recommend this book. It offers value to those who are interested in the SAS, Britain's little wars or military history in general. Serving military and combat veterans in particular may find a vehicle for coming to terms with their own experiences of war by reading this book.

The author gives the reader a front row seat on a wild ride through his life dedicated to protecting the freedom from the oppression of communism and more recently the horrors of global terrorism. He threads the emotional impacts of the horrors witnessed and at times experienced and how he suffered and overcame his demons and adjusted to a "normal" productive life.

Excellent book, read the paperback years ago. This updated version with more photos and updated story line is great.

It’s ok, a bit trite at times and the author hardly conceals his arrogance. But he is clearly a hard soldier who gave his all to his country and fought with honour. It was an interesting but frustrating book to read, kind of like his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5* all fact not fiction a cracking read brutally honest
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 12, 2021
A deserved 5* this book is not fiction but fact, details the life of one of the most inspirational hero's in the regiment. The book is by far the best insight into how these specialists are willing to go above and beyond to allow “civvies” to sleep easy at night. I’m a veteran of many tours of NI but what this guy did in many environments makes him a true hero. If you are looking for a brutally honest (not fiction, but fact, not all pop and bang but reality) this book is a must read. Pete, watching you on TV during the Iranian embassy siege made me proud to be British, You're a Legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting and lively read

This book describes very well the mental attitude of a special forces man: self belief, positive attitude, good planning. All these aspersa can do wonders in any endeavour.
At Times it seems the author is a bit embellishing his own resumé, but it is an interesting book anyway

3.0 out of 5 stars Spannende Autobiografie
Reviewed in Germany on October 10, 2012

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book well worth the Kindle cost

Mcnab provides a detailed insight into the regiment and his experiences whilst with 22. Naturally, the book is proofed by the MOD and there are little details to ensure current SOP's are not discussed in detail, however, i have read many books by ex-regiment members (Firmin, Winner et al) and this book easily provides much more detail than other offerings. Well worth your time and money.
