For every significant trip out of country, I've picked up a copy of the pertinent Lonely Planet Phrasebook and I have yet to be disappointed. I purchased two of the Latin American Spanish edition prior to a recent trip to Honduras. As with other Lonely Planet Phrasebooks, this one includes basic pronunciation and grammar, phrases organized by category, short dictionaries in both languages, and cultural commentary. While they aren't comprehensive in their vocabulary, they are compact and can easily be carried in a pocket. Unless you plan to really dig in and learn the language, my personal opinion is that one of these books is all you need to get by.

For me these books have also provided a great way to connect with local speakers. I have handed my copy to new friends more than once so they could look up phrases or words to communicate with me. When traveling to a location where you don't speak the language (in this case, Spanish), these phrasebooks combined with a smile and a good sense of humor will demonstrate a real desire to communicate in the local tongue, get you through many common situations, and ultimately help enrich your travel experience.

I was heading to Venezuela to visit a friend and had not spoken Spanish since High School in 2000. This book was a great refresher and had some great information on phrases specific to Latin America that really helped. Highly recommended as the book to keep in your bag.

I'm planning a trip to South America at the end of the year, and bought the book to supplement other Spanish learning tools. I like the layout, and the intro discussing the differences in Latin American Spanish and Castilian, pronunciation differences, and expressions used in Latin America. I like the breakdown by topic (i.e Shopping, Directions, etc) as it could be reviewed in advance of a 'situation'. There is a small English <-> Spanish section in the back for those situations where you are looking for a particular word, although it is not as complete as a real English - Spanish dictionary due in part to the amount of space. Still, this seems to be a "quick and dirty" pocket reference that could be of value while traveling, but is no substitute for other books, software, etc for learning the language. For the price, and size, it seems hard to go wrong.
It will accompany me on my trip. Only then will I know how well it really serves its intended purpose.

This phrasebook was super helpful in Peru before taking Spanish lessons. It definitely didn't make me fluent or anything, but I was able to order at a restaurant, ask for a room at a hostel, etc.

In traveling throughout Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile this book taught me local words specific to countries that really helped. Buying the new version for a trip to Colombia. Highly recommend.

I was in Guatemala for nine days and found this phrasebook to be helpful especially when I anticipated certain situations, read up on it in the book and memorized some key phrases beforehand. I like that it's organized by situation: going to a restuarant, haggling in the marketplace, dealing with the police, etc. The translation dictionary is decent but if you go exploring in areas outside major cities, some of the words used (such as certain foods) you may not see in there but that could be because there really isn't an English word for it. My blackberry served as a decent back up in those situations.

I bought this book as a present for my parents who were leaving on a trip to Guatemala. It was a great resource for people who are not fluent in Spanish but who want to be able to communicate (however awkwardly) in Spanish while in a Spanish speaking country. It contains a number of phrases that are important to know when traveling as well as the basics of the Spanish language to review prior to leaving. I would buy this again for friends in a similar situation.

I felt stupid using some of these words from this book during my vacation in Nicaragua.
The locals didn't know these words... these silly pronunciations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare Central and South American Spanish phrase book.

Many people may think that the Spanish spoken in Spain is the same Spanish spoken in Colombia or Peru. That fact is there are some differences and just like English spoken in England and the English spoken in the U.S.A or Australia these differences are slight and can still be easily understood by the other peoples. This book offers better regional knowledge of the Castilian Spanish spoken in Central and South America and will make the locals realise that you are making extra effort to connect to the unique Spanish of their country and not that of Spain. Even in this region the words can vary and it can be easy to find that a word for something in Venezuela is different to the same thing in Argentina. It is not surprising that same words may vary considering the influences that this Hispanic region has and being over 5,000 miles long helps make Spanish one of the most spoken languages in the world today.

The subjects covered are the ones you would expect in travel situations. Transportation, booking accommodation, shopping, ordering food, clubbing, health issues, romantic sayings and helpful information like numbers, dates and directions are all covered.

A good read for those who are fond of languages or those intending to visit anywhere between and including Mexico (in the North) to Chile and Argentina (in the South).

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful - but would like its' usefulness to last longer!

I am currently travelling in south America and I find this book helpful to reference. I love the way in which there are sections which deal with circumstances e.g. bus travel, booking hostels, food, conversation, etc, rather than just a general guide. I would like to see more on the verb tenses and also a more substantial dictionary. This phrase book is fantastic for beginners, but I would like to continue using it more, and I find once I learn the basic phrases,it is less useful. Still very much worth buying, and a handy size for travelling. Essential for any first time trip to south America!

A fabulous assistant when out and about in the Latin American field. I've just returned from two weeks in Honduras, where having a little bit of Castellano under your belt is invaluable and works wonders with the locals who rarely can speak much English. There are a few phrases in there too that make for humorous evenings around the campfire!
