Margaret Shepherd is a writer, calligrapher, and teacher. In addition to "The Art of the Handwritten Note," she has written thirteen books on calligraphy, including the top selling "Learn Calligraphy" now a classic in the field.

She has lectured at MIT's 'charm school' about the importance of handwritten notes, and at many, many colleges and interest groups about the basics of calligraphy. She has given workshops all over the world, from Uzbekistan to Hanoi to Helsinki. She lives in Boston.

Calligraphy fans can visit her blog for free printouts: practice guidelines; a cat calligraphy design; and her new "An Abecedary to Color" that offers a collection of six capital letters every week. She also posted a new calligraphy alphabet every day there for a year.

Margaret considers beginners the most important members of the calligraphy community, and aims to inspire, encourage, and challenge them. Thousands of readers feel they know her as though they have sat in her classes. Almost all of her books are written by hand in her calligraphy, and liberally illustrated with a wealth of drawings, diagrams, guidelines, and sample projects.

I have been a big fan of Margaret Shepherd's since I first picked up "Learning Calligraphy" in the early '80's. Now in "The Art of the Handwritten Note" I look forward to seeing ways of using the calligraphy techniques I have learned in new ways. Also I am a big fan of the prologue and chapter one in showing just WHY handwritten notes are not out of style and are still appreciated.

I like the author's assumption that we all write notes and letters and take we can all do a better job of it.

As a writer I love books like this. They point the way for others to take in the craft. Its a great reference for a writer, or would make a great gift along with a journal, stationary, pens or whatever for someone you know who loves to write. Handwritten letters seem to be fading.. bring them back to the surface with the help of this book.

In this day and ages, there are still times when an email simply will not suffice. When my mind goes blank, this helps me find a starting point. Make someone's day and send a snail mail note just for no reason at all. Trust me, it's worth the time, effort and a mere postage stamp.
