The Power of Appreciative Inquiry describes the internationally embraced approach to organizational change that dramatically improves performance by engaging people to study, discuss, and build upon what’s working – strengths – rather than trying to fix what’s not.

Diana Whitney and Amanda Trosten-Bloom, pioneers in the development and practice of Appreciative Inquiry (AI), provide a menu of eight results-oriented applications, along with case examples from a wide range of organizations to illustrate Appreciative Inquiry in action.

A how-to book, this is the most authoritative and accessible guide to the newest ideas and practices in the field of Appreciative Inquiry since its inception in 1985.

The second edition includes new examples, tools, and tips for using AI to create an enduring capacity for positive change, along with a totally new chapter on award-winning community applications of Appreciative Inquiry.

Appreciative Inquiry is a process that I feel is one of the most powerful there is for - as the subtitle of this book says - offering a practical tool to create positive change. It's easy to talk in abstract terms about change and improving the world, but it isn't often we come across a way to actually make it happen in concrete terms. AI is one of those tools. This book offers a very thorough guide to the history, mindset, methodology and diverse potential use of this powerful process. In addition, it was instrumental in the startup and methods that I now use in my own coaching, consulting and training firm. It was both an inspiration and a way of approaching the world that has helped me grow tremendously.

This handy guide will help readers come away with an understanding of AI, the steps involved in applying AI to a variety of situations, and the inspiration to trust themselves and others as they work toward positive change. The book gently guides us in realizing that there can never be one, concrete AI formula with a guaranteed outcome; the very nature of AI requires bending, flowing, adapting and responding according to the energy that is generated by the people involved in the process. Hence, this book goes beyond your traditional OD approach and brings fresh perspective to the infinite possibilities of a better future. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in organizations and leadership.

This book talks about the power of asking questions and paraphrasing answers to clarify situations and gain information from others about any situation. I love the tools this book has taught me. The skills one will learn from reading this book and putting the knowledge into action is invaluable. I highly recommend the skills taught in this book. Great read, great ideas, and excellent outcome in life if the ideas are implemented. It takes practice but one can collect information from anyone willing to have a conversation. I feel like I have the power and skills of an investigator by using the principals taught in this guide. Truly amazing stuff!

Great stuff. I think in order to understand and practice you will need to go back and reference man y concepts in the book and come up with a plan that works for your own organization

Excellent examples and stories of application. One case in particular is applied throughout the book which ties together understanding the model not just in steps but wholistically. An easy and clear read with tools and tables for application, making this book’s Practical promise very tangible.

After reading The Power of Appreciative Inquiry I realized its incredible potential in implementing positive change. I'm hooked. I plan to use what I've learned.
The authors do an exceptional job of explaining the principles in an understandable way and then using concrete examples from case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of those principles.
I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in seeing real, positive change implemented in their organization, group, or family.

For all the power of Appreciative Inquiry, I'm still waiting for a book or an article that presents the topic in a direct manner. While I did learn a great deal from this book, it was only after wandering around the subject in the discursive way that seems to be the ingrained habit of the AI authors I've encountered. Although the book begins with a chapter titled: What is appreciative inquiry, at the end of the chapter, I'm still not sure precisely what it is. It starts to feel like a zen koan, a little too elusive for my western mind. The second chapter launches into a menu of approaches to presenting AI in your company, yet I still don't clearly understand the concept we're giving approaches to. By the end of the book, a lot more was clear, but if you don't start with a pretty good understanding of AI when you pick up the book, you'll probably find it as frustrating as I did. If you are already an devotee, the book is likely very clear to you. Oh, and btw, I am conscious of the fact that by criticizing the book, I'm probably failing to practice AI. I'm not sure what to do about that. If the book was clearer to me, maybe I'd have an answer.
