Everyone knows that impertinent Lee Montgomery is marrying Charles Richardson for his money. After Lee vanishes, Charles’ friends breathe a sigh of relief. But Charles loves his pretty fiancée and is determined to get her back. He enlists the talents of Mrs. Sheila Malory, whose pastimes include reading nineteenth-century novels and ferreting out the truth. Mrs. Malory, a reluctant amateur detective, is soon convinced that Lee has been the victim of foul play. The residents of the sleepy seaside village of Taviscombe, England, are about to discover just how difficult it is to keep their terrible secrets with Mrs. Malory on the case. Gone Away is the first of Hazel Holt’s Mrs. Malory mysteries.

These are solid mysteries with great plots, good dialogue, characters with dimensions--- intelligent entertainment. They are sophisticated cozies. No silly shenanigans. Exceptional writing.

I have enjoyed the books in this series. The writing is intelligent, clever, smooth, and engaging. The books are set in in a fictional English village outside of London, and were originally published in the late 1980s.

Thank goodness they are being republished. I enjoy reading them more than Agatha Christie. They are fun and enticing. The characters are interesting and well-developed enough to propel you through the various, intriguing plots, which always have twists and turns. No one character is overdone to the point of being annoying.

Mrs. Mallory is an enjoyable, resilient, smart, thoughtful, compassionate character whom I enjoy visiting. Her cast of regulars are a great support team with their own story lines. She even has a cat and two dogs. She also adds interesting new characters to suit the cases and murders in each new book. The books are not stuffy.

This first book did not disappoint and involves a missing fiancee. Did she run away? Was she driven away? Is she dead? Did the person who asked Mrs. Mallory to find her do away with her? And just who is she anyway?

I don't like to write reviews that tell too much. You can find details if you like. I just want you to know that if you enjoy British mysteries and smart writing, give this a try. So many of the greats are gone: P.D. James and Christie, whom I mentioned. It's hard to trust authors with your money these days. If I see Hazel Holt's name, I know I'm in for a good read, and so are you.

Sheila Malory is a youngish (54) widow living in Taviscombe in the southwest of England, where she has lived for much of her life and where she keeps herself busy with charity work and the occasional article about very obscure Victorian authors. Her old friend Charles Richardson visits home from America, where he’s been working for a multinational that has made him very wealthy, and asks her to meet Lee, his new fiancee, and of course Sheila is happy to do so. Lee turns out to be very much someone that Sheila instinctively dislikes, but even so she is shocked when some weeks later, Charles calls and asks her to try to find out where Lee is as she’s been missing for a while; she is even more shocked when she stumbles upon Lee’s body with a knife sticking out of her back…. This is the first of the Mrs. Malory series, a lovely cozy that I seem to have missed first time around, although as it happens I actually have two books much later in the series. I remembered liking them without remembering a thing about them, so when casting about for more cozy reading (I’m on a cozy kick these days), I put the author’s name in the Kindle store and “Gone Away” appeared. I’m glad it did, as Sheila is one of those characters who just grows on the reader - she has a life of her own, but is also very much involved in village affairs; indeed, a modern (-ish, the early books at least are set in the 1990s I think, before cell phones anyway) Miss Marple. There are some 21 books in the series, so I have much happy reading ahead of me; recommended!

I read my first Hazel Holt on the recommendation of a friend, and felt like I had made a new friend in Mrs. Mallory. I decided to start reading the series from the beginning, and although not strictly neccessary, I found this one useful in establishing her background, lifestyle and environment, as well as having an intriguing plot. I never see the point in reviewers simply re-hashing a synopsis of the plot, which you can read in the blurb and editorial reviews. Suffice it to say if you like 'cosy' mysteries with an authentic English background and a thoroughly likeable protagonist, with a well written, easy reading style you will love Hazel Holt's Mrs. Mallory series. I'm looking forward to working my way through them all.

"Gone Away" was truly a very gentle comfortable cozy mystery. However, the victim probably wouldn't agree. The U.S. title of this book is called "Mrs. Malory Investigates" Sheila Malory is a widow who lives in the village of Taviscombe, England. Her son Michael is away at Oxford. She receives a call from her childhood friend Charles who is living and working in the U.S.. His girlfriend Lee who he is going to marry seems to have disappeared. He asks Mrs. Malory to see if she can locate Lee. Mrs. Malory recently met Lee and did not care for her. The reader is taken on a journey with Mrs. Malory as she talks to her friends and residents of Taviscombe. She is the one who finds Lee who has been murdered. Mrs. Malory continues her investigation to find out who committed the crime.

As I read this book I thought "This is really a very cozy mystery." The readers see Mrs. Malory at home with her pets and making lunches and drinks. One sees her daily village life activities along with her investigation. She is a very likable person.

I knew who the murderer was but was surprised at the murderer's reason for killing Lee. The ending too was different than most mystery books. It was a fast cozy read and the style was different than many mystery books. Besides being a mystery writer, Hazel Holt is a very good story teller.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to read Ms Holt's Mrs Malory series, but I'm so glad I finally did.

I enjoyed everything about the book: the style and tone of the writing, the story, the characters, and the ending.

Highly recommend!

It was a good story with interesting characters. It seemed slow at first.

Hazel Holt is able to create a character in Shelia Mallory that is so easy to connect to as she is in profile an average woman, widowed, yet not dramatic in any way. We get to know her as we would any friend, as we are let into her world and come to respect and appreciate her intellect and strength. The ending of the story left off as it would in a movie, and I wanted an epilogue to tie up Sheila's thoughts, but all in all, Ms. Holt is one of my new favorites!

Clearly written with some interesting characters. Got a surprise at the lack of technology but then saw when it was written.
Overall very pleasant and nice to get away from violence at every turn.

4.0 out of 5 stars First in the Mrs Malory series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 21, 2011
This is the first book in the Mrs Malory series. Sheila Malory gets a request from her friend Charles Richardson to try and find out what has happened to his fiancée Lee Montgomery. Charles works in the USA and has been unable to contact Lee since he returned to the States after Christmas. Sheila is reluctant to interfere - not least because she took an instant dislike to the lady concerned.

Sheila finds out a great deal of information about Lee from an unlikely source - her friend Rosemary's mother, the obnoxious Mrs Dudley. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters in this story and the introduction of the series characters - Rosemary and Jack and Rosemary's mother, Roger, the police inspector and Jilly his girlfriend, Rosemary's daughter.

The mystery is slight and the murderer unexpected - to me anyway. There are plenty of suspects as well. There is no on the page violence as this is a `Cosy' mystery. If you like authors such as Rebecca Tope, Veronica Heley and Lesley Cookman you will enjoy this story.

Mrs Mallory is the ideal companion on journeys, she is the friend we all wish we had and she is an unofficial lady detective who somehow, bit like Miss Marple, stumbles into crime in her own location.Having read all but two of her books so far I can only urge Hazel Holt to write some more!
