I got this for Christmas a couple years ago from the kids and finally got a change to try it out.
I'm no fly fisherman, but want to be. Evidently, I'm no fly-tyer, either. But, i did manage to get through the first project and now have a very ugly wooly bugger.
First, the tools are, as previously described, poor quality. I had to do some messing around with the bobbin to stop it from cutting the thread all the time. The tube is cut so that it has a burr around it and it cuts the thread after a couple turns. I used some small tools to try to smooth out the mouth of the bobbin tube and remove the burr. That seemed to do the trick. Few of the tools look anything like the closeup photos in the book. Otherwise, I caught on to the whip finisher pretty well, and the vise worked okay.
I'll be making some future attempts at the wooly bugger, since mine doesn't look anything like the one pictured. To complete the rest of the sample projects, you really need the candle and the small, sharp-pointed scissors and glue that are not included in the kit. To be honest, you really should have the little scissors for all the projects. That is part of why my bugger is so ugly. The other tools mentioned in the book would be helpful, but not required. So, if you plan to give this to someone, plan to purchase the additional tools and add them to the kit.

this is the same kit as the The Complete Fly-Tying Kit by Chronicle Books, a little cheaper and Prime shipping available. the tools are of low quality, but worked fine for me. the book is well illustrated and fairly simple to follow. if you are interested in a weekend project or a very basic introduction to fly tying, this product is great. i would not suggest it for someone who is serious about fly tying. spend the money on quality tools and more in depth instruction. the book focused on the 5 project ties and wont be much use after they are finished, but does provide distinction between some fly types and general fly fishing info.
i am happy with the purchase and enjoyed the time sharing it with my nephew. this kit also inspired two people in the family to peruse fly tying. would be a great gift for someone who enjoys fishing but has no experience in fly fishing.
