A ruba'i is a two-line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubáiyát (derived from the Arabic language root for "four"), meaning "quatrains".

"A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thou . . ." is one of the most famous poetic lines ever written. One of the great achievements of poetry, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, was written in Persian in the 11th century. Omar Khayyam was a consummate philosopher and astronomer whose work extended far beyond the Rubaiyat, but it is this work that survives today, a testament to the power and grace of Islamic and Persian culture at this time. The Rubaiyat is one of the most lyrical poetic works ever composed and English-speaking readers know Khayyam's work through the translation of Edward Fitzgerald, which is presented here.

About the Author

Omar Khayyam (1048 - 1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet. As a mathematician, he is most notable for his work on the classification and solution of cubic equations, where he provided geometric solutions by the intersection of conics. As an astronomer, he composed a calendar which proved to be a more accurate computation of time than that proposed five centuries later by Pope Gregory XIII. Omar was born in Nishapur, in northeastern Iran. He spent most of his life near the court of the Karakhanid and Seljuq rulers in the period which witnessed the First Crusade. There is a tradition of attributing poetry to Omar Khayyam, written in the form of quatrains. This poetry became widely known to the English-reading world due to the translation by Edward FitzGerald (Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, 1859), which enjoyed great success in the Orientalism of the fin de siècle.

Edward FitzGerald (1809 - 1883) was an English poet and writer, best known as the poet of the first and most famous English translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The writing of his name as both FitzGerald and Fitzgerald is seen. The use here of FitzGerald conforms with that of his own publications, anthologies such as Quiller-Couch's Oxford Book of English Verse and most reference books up until about the 1960s.

I love these poems. Although they were written in the tenth century they are relavent for today. They are not long and arranged so they are easy to read. Good for picking up and reading a little when you can and putting down until later. I suggest a person google Omar Kayhan as he was far ahead of his time in science and all subjects. Even though he was from another country and in the tenth century his poems are just applicable to today and human nature.

Okay, so I don't really review Kindle editions for their literary qualities. I review them as a warning about formatting and readability to people considering getting them.

This version does not have line breaks. Now, I have no idea whether Fitzgerald's original version has line breaks, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it does. How can a rubaiya possibly be considered a quatrain if there are no line breaks in it. So, don't buy this version. Buy the other one that does have line breaks (
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam ).

Bought the e-book since I lost the physical copy my grandfather gave me as a child which I absolutely loved reading. However, all that showed on my tablet is the title page then six blank pages. I tried to refund it but there was an "error" in the refund process. Officially just wasted money.

Good read. Appears to be a transliteration , a little fragmented. Liked the Richard Le Gallienne one better which is a translation based on existing translation
