I have had strictly trail, and mountain horses that I trained myself. If I could have had this book 45 years ago it would have saved me a lot of time, and pain. The book that helped me back then was "The Mind of The Horse". It is hard to find now.

Good information.

This book is an excellent review of basic horse behavior as it pertains to horse training, I found it to be an outstanding book but it isn't a book on how to train your horse. It is not a scientific study and is not extensively referenced, it was written for the lay public
The author briefly covers many controversial topics, pointing out among other things that most horses are improperly housed, that the dominance hierarchy paradigm used by many if not most trainers is severely flawed, and that positive reinforcement is by far the best way to train a horse.
This book was written as an introduction to the subject and certainly isn't a complete review but even if you already know a lot about horse behavior and have read Paul McGreevy and George Waring you will undoubtedly pick up some valuable insight.
The second half of the book is on breeds, travel stress, competition and some other topics that I did not find especially interesting or enlightening. I would have preferred this space to have been devoted to expanding the sections on horse behavior. A more extensive bibliography would also have been appreciated.

Guilty of horse abuse, both the author and her husband banned form keeping horses for life. Do not support this author.

I got this book in hopes that it would explain how to "read" a horse and what certain reactions or movements by horses meant, but it really doesn't at all. It really is just a very general book about the nature of horses based on what they would naturally do in the wild. If you're looking for specific information about training or riding or bonding with your horse, or reading him, this book will not help. If you want to learn more about what is more natural for a horse, such as how it is fed, how much foraging it is allowed to do, then there is some info. here.

This woman just had her horses taken away, one of which had to be put down, because of abuse. Have fun reading.
