Shepherd's amazing ability to laugh at herself connects the reader to the author in a wonderful feeling of camraderie which is, I think, Shepherd's greatest strength. In telling her own story she has created a story of "everywoman" and many will probably heave a sigh of relief as they read of Shepherd's escapades and think, "Oh, yeah--her, too!"
