The Solo Devotional isn’t that. It invites you to engage with scripture, notice where you stand in perspective to it, and challenges you to slow down.
Positives-
1. Gives you guidance in reflecting on what you are reading and applying what you read to your everyday life, which can help when reading the bible.
2. It kind of takes you through the whole bible a year, from genisis to revelations, without making it overly obvious that this is what it is doing. Helps you apply/understand the old testament. Covers many topics.
3. Its the MSG version, so it is easy to understand the concept behind the passage.
Negatives-
1. Extended passages aren't inside book so you need another bible to go along with it.
2. Sometimes feels very basic and doesn't go in depth into many isses. (but i'm only on day 8)
3. it's the MSG, so its not exact scripture.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read through pretty much teh whole bible and really wants to take something from it, but I would also suggest using a bible other than the MSG alongside it to clarify it at times.
I bought three of these for my sons ages 17, 19, and 21. They have also liked the format and it is the first thing that they have really stuck with and enjoyed.
I think Eugene Peterson offers just the right amount of comments to stimulate your thinking but not so much that it overpowers what God might be trying to say.
I would recommend this to anyone ages 15 and up.
So do you have time to "prime the pump" spiritually every day? Rove said Bush would have done more reading, but he lost the contest "because he'd been busy as Leader of the Free World." What's your excuse?
What books will you read this year? And how many? For starters on your Bible reading/devotional times, you will enjoy the unique format of Solo, a Scripture selection from The Message on one page and a Read/Think/Pray/Live brief commentary on the second page.
"The devotions found in Solo are based on the classical method of lectio divina: reading, thinking, praying and living Scripture with the intention of inviting an infinite, omniscient God into your life--as it is, no gloss, no veneer. Lectio divina is more Bible basking than Bible study," say the authors.
This is my pick for this year. Basking sounds good.
