The book itself seems interesting. However, the copy I received was visibly damaged and obviously used, dispute buying a new copy. I even found someone’s hand written note inside. Disappointed as this was a gift for my husband.

Here’s my problem with devotionals: most of them don’t engage the reader. Short passage, short perspective, short prayer, and you’re done. Pat yourself on the back and get on with your day.

The Solo Devotional isn’t that. It invites you to engage with scripture, notice where you stand in perspective to it, and challenges you to slow down.

A friend suggested this devo to me. There are positives and negatives about it.

Positives-

1. Gives you guidance in reflecting on what you are reading and applying what you read to your everyday life, which can help when reading the bible.
2. It kind of takes you through the whole bible a year, from genisis to revelations, without making it overly obvious that this is what it is doing. Helps you apply/understand the old testament. Covers many topics.
3. Its the MSG version, so it is easy to understand the concept behind the passage.

Negatives-

1. Extended passages aren't inside book so you need another bible to go along with it.
2. Sometimes feels very basic and doesn't go in depth into many isses. (but i'm only on day 8)
3. it's the MSG, so its not exact scripture.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read through pretty much teh whole bible and really wants to take something from it, but I would also suggest using a bible other than the MSG alongside it to clarify it at times.

This is a different type of devotional that I find very helpful in learning to listen for God during one's "quiet time". Most devotionals have a verse of Scripture and maybe an inspirational story which is fine but one can read through those and still not really have quieted their spirit and tried to hear what God might be saying to them through His Word.

I bought three of these for my sons ages 17, 19, and 21. They have also liked the format and it is the first thing that they have really stuck with and enjoyed.

I think Eugene Peterson offers just the right amount of comments to stimulate your thinking but not so much that it overpowers what God might be trying to say.

I would recommend this to anyone ages 15 and up.

President George W. Bush is a book lover. Besides reading through the Bible each year, along with a daily devotional reading, the President read 95 books in 2006. He finished 51 books in 2007 and read at least 40 in 2008. Karl Rove, former senior adviser and deputy chief of staff to President Bush, reported all of this in a Wall Street Journal column on Dec. 26, 2008. Rove and the President had a little reading contest going over the years. Rove won each year (his top mark was 110 books in 2006). Amazing.

So do you have time to "prime the pump" spiritually every day? Rove said Bush would have done more reading, but he lost the contest "because he'd been busy as Leader of the Free World." What's your excuse?

What books will you read this year? And how many? For starters on your Bible reading/devotional times, you will enjoy the unique format of Solo, a Scripture selection from The Message on one page and a Read/Think/Pray/Live brief commentary on the second page.

"The devotions found in Solo are based on the classical method of lectio divina: reading, thinking, praying and living Scripture with the intention of inviting an infinite, omniscient God into your life--as it is, no gloss, no veneer. Lectio divina is more Bible basking than Bible study," say the authors.

This is my pick for this year. Basking sounds good.

It starts Jan. 1 and goes through Dec. 31. The first half covers the Old Testament, the second half the New Testament. The first half about the Old Testament I did not like, but I don't particularly appreciate the Old Testament, anyway. There is a version of Solo that only covers the New Testament, and if I had it to do over, I'd only buy that edition. However, the study guides are excellent.

"An uncommon devotional" is an accurate description of this book. It's creative and thought provoking. There are no blanks to fill in to prove the assignment is done . It's different every day. There is something from every book -- Old and New Testament. It need not be read in chronological order. Like the Psalms? Go to the Psalms. How about a thought on Amos? The scripture is written out, no need to have another book open. Time requirement? It depends on you. Hopefully you'll take time to meditate. It's rewarding. I'm buying more for friends. THANKS!

I really like the way the devotional is laid out, with four sections: read, think, pray, and live. Each day has a short, specific passage, but you can chose to read more of the passage in the bible's context if you wish. The book takes a different approach to bible study than what I'm used to: more of learning to communicate with God rather than just reading a book of history. Very useful tool, good value for money; I would suggest also purchasing the complete Message reading Bible, too.

I am an unabashed fan of Eugene Peterson's The Message, and this companion was excellent. I would have benefitted from more time and quieter reading circumstances (usually part of my commute), but planning on re-engaging soon.
