Gary LaFontaine became world famous for his innovative trout fly patterns. But his life was cut short when he died of ALS in 2002. His final designs, however, were left in the caring hands of friend, author, and professional tyer Al Beatty, who proceeded to tie and photograph LaFontaine's final set of undocumented patterns to create this book. Here are full-color photos and instructions on how to tie each of LaFontaine's last designs, showing each step in detail. This is a beautiful book, essential to every fly tyer, that is also a loving tribute to an innovative sportsman.

From the Inside Flap

Gary LaFontaine became world famous for his innovative trout-fly patterns. But his life was cut short when he died of Lou Gehrig's disease in 2002. Fortunately, his final designs were left in the caring hands of friends, authors, and professional tiers Al and Gretchen Beatty, who tied and photographed LaFontaine's final set of undocumented patterns to create this book. Here are full-color photos and instructions on how to tie each of LaFontaine's last designs, showing each step in detail.
This is a beautiful book―essential to every fly tier―that is also a loving tribute to the creative genius of one of fly fishing's greatest minds.

From the Back Cover

Fly Tyer, the world's leading fly-tying magazine, is proud to bring you FlyTyer Books published by The Lyons Press. Gary LaFontaine has automatic name recognition in the fly-fishing world―he's known as one of the smartest and most dedicated innovators of new trout fly patterns in the latter twentieth century. His methods changed fly tying in America, and he was nowhere near done when he died of Lou Gehrig's disease in 2002 at age fifty-six. His death was mourned around the world.
Many of the flies in this posthumous collection of trout-fly patterns are likely to become enduring standards. Authors Al and Gretchen Beatty were working with LaFontaine and tiers Paul and Char Stimpson on an instructional film in the months before the fly tier died. These are the flies that LaFontaine spoke of during filming. These are the flies showcased in
LaFontaine's Legacy.
The twenty-six patterns with proper tying instructions detailed in this book are the final legacy of a renowned American angler. Throughout the work the Beattys provide thorough tying instructions which are accompanied by vivid full-color photographs to depict the various stages of creating each pattern on the tying bench as well as the completed fly. This book documents an important piece of American fly-fishing history.

This is a must have book with Gary LaFontaine's previously unpublished flies written by Al and Gretchen Beatty. The detail given in the tying instructions is outstanding. I now have most of the LaFontaine books and tying videos. I will tell you these flies are different from what you can purchase commercially and these catch fish like all get out. So get this book if you can find it and also the LaFontaine book, Trout Flies: Proven Patterns." Well worth the effort and the knowledge you can gain from Gary's underwater SCUBA observations and the effect his flies have on trout. Also pick up some of Al Beatty's Tacky and Super Tacky Dubbing Wax. These were developed by Al and Gretchen at Gary's request to use in his Touch Dub Method. These waxes are totally different than what you can buy commercially. They are as good if not better than the old Overton's Magic Wax now unavailable. I guarantee you will love them. And NO I don't work for the Beatty's! Tight lines and great tying!

a very attractive book that is a solid addition to the work of the recent generation of tyers who use very unorthodox materials and methods. i have not read it intensively yet but the prospective buyer should take into consideration that LaFontaine was one of the few who approached fishing from an unusual and helpful perspective, in studying trout behavior in response to flies from underwater.

This is an interesting summary of Gary's philosophy of fly fishing and tying that includes some new patterns. Beatty presents these with his usual flair for good teaching. The step by step pictures make it very practical for any skilled fly tier.

I had most of LaFontaine's books on fly-tying and theory, so I needed this one to complete the collection. He must have been quite the man, and he was certainly an innovator. I have to say, though, that this was not a particularly interesting book. I'm glad I got it at a hefty discount.

Al and Gretchen do a super job of paying homage to one of the best fly fishermen/ scientists who ever lived. All fly fishermen should pay homage to him by reading this book.
