The ladies of the Maintown, Oregon church are all abuzz when they learn of the new and single circuit-riding preacher that will be coming through town. They all decide to inspire their daughters to make a quilt to welcome him, which soon results in a competition between the girls as each tries to out-sew the other. But Zach Hartley is unlike any preacher they've ever seen - he's clumsy in the pulpit and does women's work rather than praying over the sick. While this only serves to endear him to most women, Ellie sees something suspicious in his character. Maybe it's his connections to the Portland crime ring and other dangerous thugs?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Zack Hartley, eligible bachelor and long awaited circuit preacher, rides into Maintown, Oregon, after the Civil War. When the young women of the church present him with a handmade quilt to celebrate his arrival, narrator Christy King depicts Zack's loss for words with stammering and hesitancy. King’s polished performance captures the sense of mystery that surrounds the bumbling new preacher, his unusual sermons, his even more unusual prayers, and the women's humorous competition for his attention. King’s powerful characterizations of sisters Maggie and Ellie, fiercely competitive in quilting and in matchmaking, are especially believable. Aligning mood and voice, King portrays Ellie's developing suspicions of Zack with clarity. The surprising conclusion will leave listeners anticipating the next book in the series."

This was a wonderful book! We read it for our book club and everyone enjoyed it. The reading of this book by our Book Club resulted in significant discussion with everyone having an opinion as to who Zach would finally end up with! Whether you read it or listen to it on Audible do pick this book up! It's a winner.
(I apologize to the sellers of this book in that I had published a review of a lotion I bought and it ended up under this book! I'm so sorry that happened!)

well written and an easy read when i am in need of a break from work and heavier topics. i like Christian fiction for the lack of focus on sex and the increased focus on relationships and family.

This was an interesting read of how sometimes life goes astray by simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
However, who are we to question God's plan and the timing of it all.

Judith Pella has written a clever and enjoyable original story, the first novel of hers I have found in my local public library's large print section. I hope there will be more available there. She describes the main characters so vividly that I felt I knew them, especially Zach as the pretending new minister. Although his actions were deceptive and both legally and morally wrong, I felt a strong empathy for him and couldn't help but like and admire him for his honest desire to help the people in the small town and to be as real and honest as he could in the circumstances. There were surprise turns in the story and a very satisfying ending. I recommend this book for clean, optimistic, enjoyable reading and I do hope to read more of Pella's novels.
