PREPARE TO LAUGH AND LEARN

Scientific answers to mysteries kids really want to know.

Sure a lot of kids want to grow up to be astronauts, but according to scientist Glenn Murphy, even MORE kids want to know what happens to astronaut farts. (Short answer: Not good things!) And they want to know: Why don't all fish die from lightening storms? Why haven't we all been sucked into a black hole? Do animals talk? Told in a back-and-forth conversational style,
Why is Snot Green? presents science just the way kids want to learn it--with lots of laughter.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

“Is the Earth really getting hotter, and is that so bad?” “Why do we walk on two legs (instead of four)?” Conservation, evolution, technology, animal life, space travel, physics, and much more are discussed in this lively science book. The writer worked at the London Science Museum, and the chatty questions and answers read like an informal guided tour for kids, with text that is compelling, never intimidating, and sometimes deliberately outrageous. Starting with the book’s title, the open talk about yucky bodily functions will grab even reluctant readers (“Do rabbits fart? Why?” “What are scabs for, and is it OK to pick them?”). Children will have fun browsing the spacious pages and sharing what they read with adults, who can join in the explanations about complex stuff, including time travel and Einstein’s theory of relativity. Grades 3-6. --Hazel Rochman

Review

“Students will find this a fun book to browse independently or share with friends. An excellent choice for reluctant readers in search of entertaining, informative nonfiction.” ―School Library Journal

“Parents who slugged through science back in the day might want to take a peek, and science teachers confronting the lost, the confused, or the disengaged should welcome this as a lively back-up plan.” ―
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

“This will be devoured by even the most reluctant readers or scientists.” ―
Kirkus Reviews

“Reluctant readers will find both format and subject appealing. Public libraries and media centers should acquire multiple copies, if possible, to meet certain demand.” ―
VOYA

This book was highly intertaining. It is just what i imagined it would be like. I think any one with a sense of humor would enjoy it. It has a lot of questions answered, that you would wonder about but not generally ask. My husband and sister really enjoyed it and i will be passing it along to the rest of the family and friends.

I had some fun with two fifth grades classes today reading, and have students attempt to answer some of the questions posed, in this book. It certainly got everyone's attention and they were very surprised (and a bit grossed out, but in a GOOD way) with the answers. The books in written Q & A format and the responses are conversational and chatty.

Basic questions such as, "Why is the sky blue?" and "What are sneezes for, anyway?" along with, "Where did the Moon come from?" to "Will computers ever be smarter than people?" are among the numerous queries posed and will keep those certain kids that love to ask "those" questions busy reading. There are lists sprinkled throughout the book. One such list called, "Top 10 Killer Animals" kept my students guessing because of the surprising answers. This book is good to read as a group, or for individual reading.

There are also plenty of nasty/gross questions along with even more delightfully disgusting answers. They liked it, so I like it.

This is the best book to accompany How Loud Can You Burp? My 7th graders love the questions and answers--especially the "gross" ones.

This book was ok. I though it would talk about song being green but it didn't. It ewe as long and boring. It would be better if it was shorter like 120 pages.

"Why is Snot Green" is great book because it makes science fun. This book allows the reader (both young and old) to learn without the monotony of a typical science book. Targeted towards the interests of young scientists, this book allows children to learn about science in a entertaining way. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about science without the drudgery of a traditional text book.

Every family should own a copy of 'Why is Snot Green?' Glenn Murphy is so gifted... His writing is so lucid and engaging... Facts suddenly become so exciting, that I wonder why our Science text books cannot be like this book...

This book is so much better than the title gives it credit for. I read it cover to cover to my kids who were totally engrossed, they would often anticipate the next question. The explanation of distances through space, spiders hearing through the hairs on their legs and of course the reason why snot is green, just fascinating.
