Of course for anyone who's made it to volume 33 they're more than likely not going to get 34 just because someone recommends it, but I'll say it anyway. BUY THIS BOOK! It's difficult to find a story that can stretch across this much time that still has its original aim and hasn't wavered, which Berserk has done and more. Not only has it kept a constant story with unforgettable characters, epic levels of violence and cruelty, a keen sense of morbid/dark humor as well as some truly heart-rending emotion, but it has provided some of the most accurate and biting social and political commentary I've ever encountered.
I have one incredibly minor complaint which shouldn't have any bearing on someone's desire to buy this book, and that is Guts and his crew are only in it for two two-page spreads (actually, it's only Guts who appears twice). However I'm well aware that the Millennium Falcon Arc needed to come to an end and having chapters back on Roderick's ship would have severely broken up the flow of this final battle.
All-in-all volume 34 has laid the groundwork for Griffith to do something incredible that has already begun to change the entire face of the planet (which we actually see for the first time in this volume). The lines of reality and fantasy have been blurred and it's pretty obvious that the Black Swordsman is going to have a lot of work in front of him whenever he and his rag-tag band return from Skellig Island
His war demons will have to unveil their true forms to their human allies. Will the Band of the Hawk fracture under the strain, or will the rally and fight with their demonic brethren against the vile spawn of Emperor Ganishika?
This volume is wall to wall action, showing us just how much the stream of causality controls even one who seems outside of it. The Godhand's plan is entering into its next phase. All events in the world have lead to this battle.
The Hawk of Light challenges the God of Destruction. It's the stuff of legends. And it is all a lie.
BERSERK continues to be amazing. Miura's storytelling is powerful. This fantasy epic graphic novel shows while it's one of the best out there. If you're a fan of fantasy, you need to read this series!
