She's accidentally destroyed a dozen cars. She's a target for every psycho and miscreant this side of the Jersey Turnpike. Her mother's convinced she'll end up dead . . . or worse, without a man. She's Stephanie Plum, and she kicks butt for a living (well, she thinks it sounds good to put it that way. . . .).

It begins as an innocent trip to the deli-mart, on a quest for nachos. But Stephanie Plum and her partner, Lula, are clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. A robbery leads to an explosion, which leads to the destruction of yet another car. It would be just another day in the life of Stephanie Plum, except that she becomes the target of a gang---and of an even scarier, more dangerous force that comes to Trenton. With super bounty hunter Ranger acting more mysteriously than ever (and the tension with vice cop Joe Morelli getting hotter), she finds herself with a decision to make: how to protect herself and where to hide while on the hunt for a killer known as the Junkman. There's only one safe place, and it has Ranger's name all over it---if she can find it. And if the Junkman doesn't find her first. With Lula riding shotgun and Grandma Mazur on the loose, Stephanie Plum is racing against the clock in her most suspenseful novel yet.
Ten Big Ones is page-turning entertainment, and Janet Evanovich is the best there is.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for To the Nines audio editions:

“Narrator Lorelei King does a fabulous job, as each character is assigned a distinctive voice, thus milking the humor for every drop.”—
The Boston Globe

“Narrator King somehow makes the crazy, comic antics of Evanovich’s irresistible bond agent, Stephanie Plum, seem almost rational in this fine audio adaptation....With plenty of prior experience narrating Evanovich titles, King has no trouble highlighting the eccentricities of the author’s invariably quirky cast of characters....King’s chameleon voice and ease with accents make this a lively listening experience.”—
Publishers Weekly

"Narrator King steps neatly into Stephanie's shoes, her agile voice conveying not only Stephanie's fear and frustration, but her plaintive, why-does-this-always-happen-to-me attitude. King also nails the manly, mysterious voice of gorgeous bounty hunter Ranger, Stephanie's sometime superhero...her vocal stylings are generally as superb as Evanovich's zany characterization."--Publishers Weekly

Stephanie Plum has managed to seriously annoy a local gang, and they’ve hired a hit man to kill her — as painfully as possible. So she goes into hiding. This an adventure in itself. Though periodically she has to come out of hiding to snag a bail jumper, or eat dinner with her crazy family, or pay attention to her sister Valerie’s upcoming wedding.

Valerie is too emotional to plan her wedding, but luckily Salvatore (“Sally”) Sweet reappears in this book and takes on the role of wedding planner. Sally, a hairy hook-nosed cross-dresser, is one of my favorite characters in this series. He’s driving a school bus now, and valiantly trying to give up swearing, so as not to give a bad example to the “little dudes.” He ends up being heroic in other ways too in this wacky plot.

I’m off to the next book — totally hooked.

As always, a very good read. There is a lot going on and lots of laugh. Makes you want to pick up the next book. I loved it.

Spoilers ahead! If you're just looking for vacation reading material, wait for this to come out in paperback, and prepare to be able to put it down whenever you need to. This is not page-turning excitement. In fact, the novel's energy varies greatly -- and it starts out dead cold. When Janet focuses in on Stephanie, the energy picks up noticeably. Fun ensues. Focus away from Steph and it's just Janet trotting out her schtick by the numbers.
There are some REALLY great twists!!! The villain of this book is every bit as good and menacing as the boxer from vol. 1, with the glimpse into gangs frighteningly realistic. That gave me high hopes. Towards the end Janet throws a twist our way and I thought, well, it's a repeat of an earlier book -- but okay if it works! But then it became a red herring and things fell apart.
The biggest sin of this book is that Stephanie doesn't win her fight. No, she has to have a man save her. And in the penultimate climax, yet another man saves her hide. In addition, now we find that Ranger has a perpetual "babysitter" patrol that keeps watch on her.
Is this any way to write a kick-you-know-what heroine? NO!!! And worse yet, this ending has precedent. Book 3 has Stephanie winning -- as long as Ranger backs her up. #4 is a group effort, though Steph is in the lead. Ranger saves the day in #6 and #8. Diesel pulls her fat out of the fire in that awful "Sugar Plum" book. Sheer unlikely and unprepared luck saves Steph's butt in #9, though she indeed pulls the trigger.
It's time Stephanie grew up, learned more about her craft, put it to use, and found some focus with her love life. She should be punished for the way she treats/teases Ranger with no real thought of ever settling with him. I lost a lot of respect for her in that department with this book.
Stephanie is still salvageable. I wish this book had gone back to rewrite, with the final red herring turning into a true climax with Stephanie saving the day. That would have given it another half-star. Don't rehash Stephanie's character or situation! Let her move ahead, change, and WIN FOR HERSELF.

The usual suspects are all here along with Stephanie…Morelli, Bob, Rex, Ranger, Grandma Mazur, Lula, and the rest, with the addition of a new character, Sally Sweet, rock singer, transvestite and wedding planner extraordinaire, not to mention the Junkman, a gang member who is out for blood, namely Stephanie’s. How will Stephanie get out of this jam? Read and see and laugh out loud while you are at it. Another winner!

I have enjoyed Stephanie Plum & the other characters. They're idiotic method just keeps bringing a smile to my face to the point that I kind of wish they would make a TV series out of them. Thank you for bringing me out of the reality of my world into the laughter of their world.

This wasn't classic Evanovich, but it kept me adequately entertained while flying and vacationing recently. My biggest criticism of this outing was that there seemed to be so many loose ends...she spends great amounts of time talking about certain people and then the story ends and you never hear how their part of the story ended. The gang intrigue was okay...definitely added an element of danger (for Stephanie as well as everyone who loves her). But what I really loved was the interaction of Stephanie and Lula (what a hoot she is) and the fact that we got to see a little bit of The Secret Life of Ranger...it may or may not be the Bat Cave, but it was a delicious little morsel...including the sexual tension between Ranger and Stephanie (but is anything ever going to HAPPEN there? Sheesh). Stephanie constantly screwing up is getting long in the tooth by this tenth outing...but I still love her goofy self and the wacky cast of characters that populate each Plum escapade (loved the character of Sally this time out--esp. the pivotal scene in the red dress! LOL).

I no longer rush to buy Evanovich's books in hardback (which I did faithfully until she got to around book #7 in the series), but I still get enough fluffy enjoyment out of the Plum series to keep buying the paperbacks.

Stephanie continues to develop. Evanovich goes to great lengths to give the reader the feelings and details from her family, job, relationships and even her pet hamster. Bravo for weaving a marvelously entertaining tale, once again.

I love all Janet's books, they are sure to give you belly laughs each time. Wonderful, quirky characters, I've already decided that Kirsten Bell or Emma Stone should play Stephanie and without a doubt, Octavia Spencer IS Lula! I'm collecting all as they are good for a reread down the road.
