Dressed up in wedding finery, Soah is sent out to sea in a boat and left to die. Her fellow villagers believe that this will make the water god show them favor, and will encourage him to provide them with the rain they desperately need to survive.
While she is chosen in part for her beauty, Soah is willingly given up by her father in exchange for a handsome bribe from the villagers. Feeling that she has no choice in what happens to her, Soah willingly steps into the boat prepared for her and waits for death in the middle of the ocean.
Instead of death, Soah finds herself lifted from the ocean near her village to the palace of Habaek, the water god. Instead of being killed or sacrificed when she reaches the palace, she finds that she is to be Habaek's bride until he decides otherwise.
While she is happy to have her life spared, Soah finds that Habaek is not what she expected. Childlike in appearance and cold toward her, Soah wonders why Habaek kept her alive if he seems to have no affection for her.
But Mui--a mysterious man that Soah sees only at night--makes her wonder if Habaek is really what he seems, or if there is another side of him that he has kept secret from her.
Translated from the original Korean to English, "Bride of the Water God" is well written overall. It can be a bit choppy in places, but those who read manga or manhwa on a consistent basis will be more apt to understand the flow of the story.
The art is fantastic; since the story revolves around a mythical tale, Mi-kyung was able to take a lot of artistic liberties. (Think a sweeping castle in the sky, and ornate costumes and scenery.)
This is a good series for anyone who already likes manga and manhwa, as well as those that appreciate good art or love stories that are rich in mythical undertones.
This is the first of the adventures of a young woman, Soah destined and in fact sacrificed to the water god. Her village is an agricultural one and rain is a life-or-death matter. In case of drought; she is the chosen one. She is set adrift. So she finds herself in the world of the gods. It makes sense that she knows not the ways of the gods, their good/bad alignments or their rules. If she is going to make friends with a guide into the spirit world it is not in book 1. She is disoriented, as we would be and like her we only get bits and images of this new world, its haughty powerful spirits, ongoing family politics and potentially dangerous squabbles.
I suspect that it is my fault that I do not feel any connection to this young human. I am willing to believe that she is of good heart and intent. She is lovely to look and she will , no doubt ,lead an exciting life. One where she will impress herself upon her haughty betters. That and blah blah blah and many, many more books to buy. Soah deserves at least another look. Maybe if I can find a cheap copy I will try again.
