That being said, I'm already familiar with Michael Stackpole's "X-Wing" series (And various additions by other authors). I fell in love with the series, but they had always made references to various events or people that I wasn't familiar with.
This Omnibus details their stories and fills in those gaps. This covers the time frame immediately right after the Battle of Endor and moves forward some. I must say that the action comes flying at you fast and furious, with the same usual sly wit coming from the characters. It's also refreshing to visually seeing the characters on the pages rather than just imagining what they look like in your head. (Mirax is a looker, BTW! LOL) Quick related side note, the various changes in outfits (For example, into the standard Rebel flight suit) sometimes erase their individual visual characteristics. However, they take effort to identify everyone, so you don't get lost as to who is who.
I have a GREAT respect for comics as an art form, and the artwork is fantastic. Yes, with age they don't quite "pop" as the more recent stuff, but they're solid enough in their own right. The technical details are right on point, and some of the panels are downright stunning. I find myself wanting to blow up a few of them to poster size and wanting to mount them on my wall!
Overall, if you're a Star Wars fan and a fan of the X-Wing series in particular, you REALLY should get this. Waiting for payday to hit to pick up Volume Two. =)
The comics take place over the course of 6 months to a year after Return of the Jedi, so let's have a look, because despite the seemingly high praise above, the quality does vary substantially. Volume 1 is arguably the lesser of the three:
- Rogue Leader 1-3: some Endor-based action featuring Luke Skywalker, this is a competent effort hampered by association with the sillier parts of Return of the Jedi. Not the best entry-point in the series but some compelling artwork in places, though Luke looks a bit weird. 2.5 stars.
- Issues 1-4 - "The Rebel Opposition" - whether it's down to the artwork or the storytelling style, there's a retro vibe to this outing. The story, involving the Rogues caught on a world that hates the Alliance and Empire equally, quickly becomes more sophisticated, and Stackpole is starting to look at ease both with his cast of characters and the comic format. 3 stars.
- Issues 5-8 - "The Phantom Affair" - easily the highpoint of the first omnibus, this is where the series really hits its stride and demonstrates its power when things are at their best. The story - rebels and imperials negotiating a university planet's alliance to get their hands on revolutionary tech - is hugely compelling, as is Wedge's backstory and the introduction of a character from the novels. The real ace on display is Edvin Biukovic's (Last Command, Grendel) artwork, a deft hand with landscapes and architecture, he is wonderful at characters, investing even background players with personality. His frames explode with energy and life, which makes it regrettable that a few pages near the end are illustrated by inferior artists (deadline issues) but this one remains a winner. 5 stars.
- The X-Wing handbook - this omnibus volume also includes this one-shot comic which was sold separately, but given how relevant it is to later episodes and the amount of spoilers, it feels odd to have included it here. 2 stars: 3 for the bonus content, 1 for the stupid placement.
Summary: this is a fine series with a bumpy start, though even the inferior tales have their merits, you could conceivably just get The Phantom Affair (a perfect entry point) and then continue with omnibus 2.
Overall: 3.5 stars (not an option on amazon, hence the discrepancy)
If you love SW pilots, odds are you'll love it. The artwork is pleasant enough.
JP over and out.
