Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

One of the things one least expects to find in a space opera is an excerpt from a grand opera. But the final chapter of this book is prefaced by a quotation from Der Rosenkavalier. Indeed, heroine Ahmi Sheva seems modeled after Strauss's Marschallin. Each is a noblewoman who, unhappily married to a military officer, takes a young lover: the Marschallin to Octavian, and Ahmi to a farm boy turned soldier, Hardi Degas. Both women feel world-weary and old, though Ahmi doesn't look more than 30. Each foresees that her new amour will eventually leave her for a girl his own age, and, indeed, Degas falls in love with his young countrywoman Una. The parallel to Strauss gives Moeller's story what emotional depth it has. Otherwise, this is just a standard issue sci-fi war story depicting the familiar situation of a future in which humans have colonized other worlds but are menaced by an evil alien empire. The enemy, the Vaylen, are parasitic worms that link with their hosts' minds, evoking memories of Robert Heinlein's The Puppet Masters or even Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Moeller's painted artwork is handsome but rarely distinctive. It's as if he is trying to squeeze the mature sensibility of Rosenkavalier into the adolescent monster-hunting warfare of Heinlein's Starship Troopers—and it's not a good fit.

From Booklist

In the universe of Iron Empires, Moeller's now finally collected 1990s comics, humanity huddles in eight galactic nations besieged by the Vaylen, wormlike parasites that take over their hosts' will and motivation. The baroness of Taramai, Ahmi Sheva, namesake of Sheva's War, is bored. The baron is much older than she, and she regrets not taking up with Count Karishun, who trained her as a soldier and implanted some of his own political ambition in her. Karishun has come under indirect but powerful Vaylen control, however, since she knew him, and when, assuming command of local forces after gorillalike minions of the Vaylen attack, she calls for the larger forces he commands, he alone comes but dodges requests for counsel. Valiantly leading her outnumbered forces, Sheva is twice saved by the muscular teenage farmboy who first reported the Vaylen attackers. Romantically, Sheva is torn between the count, the boy, and her husband, and she is again nearly killed before the scales fall from her eyes about all three men.

contains all 5 of the miniseries "iron empires, sheva's war", a sequel to the miniseries, "iron empires". all writing and artwork by christopher moeller.

this is a hand painted very clever science fiction story that also has a perfectly balanced and integrated amount of personal drama mixed in. the hero of the story is also a sexy cougar chasing after young dudes to sleep with because she's been bored with what looks like an arranged marriage to a much older man because of his high social and political station. the science fiction includes some truly terrifying and believable creatures terrorizing the humans, while almost never having to resort to "gross out" effects. the pampered, spoiled hero/cougar must get into the muddy war trenches with the common folk who she has been taught to look down on. there is tons of very clever intrigue and brilliant plot twists which i will not give away here.

the artwork is profound. very subtle gestures of the characters are captured in paint with seeming effortless fluidity. a wince. a slightly squinted eye. a look of shock. the emotionally charged curling of lips. as well a body language and action. just amazing.

as someone who is trying to collect mostly hand painted comics, this one is awesome and a great addition to my collection.

Absolutely fantastic graphic novel. I picked this and "Faith Conquers" up as I had bought Luke Cranes "Burning Empires RPG". The stories and characters in these novel are great and it really makes the rules of the game make sense.

Artwork is great and the concept of man fighting off invaders who in this story try to use and overwhelming force and in "Faith" by deception and infiltration. Really good stuff.

Shiva's War contains gorgeous artwork and a rich story full of three-dimensional characterizations. Moeller's dramatic work is a fine addition to any collection of science fiction graphic novels. Although not the first work in the series, it is fine as a stand-alone work.

(After reading it, many buyers will wish to buy Faith Conquers.)

The rich universe, created by Christopher Moeller, has recently been adapted into a popular roleplaying game, Burning Empires.

In keeping with Moeller's other work, Sheva's War is characterized by deft and concise characterization in a clever, original, and frightening world. If one had any pleasure in the reading of Faith Conquers, one will appreciate the deeper glance into the milieu development offered by SW.

As to why this is three stars and not five, before I finished reading the title (2 hours time) the cover came off. That is, the entire cardboard panel that constituted the front and back covers, and to which the text spine was glued, came entirely removed. A book that cannot survive two hours' handling is of pathetically bad quality, and for that alone I was forced to compromise in my rating.

This is the second book in the series. It collects a few of the original comics, long out of print, under one cover. Together, the pieces here represent a complete story from the longer-running Iron Empires series.
This has everything I want in a good comic. The art is strong and painterly, the story makes sense and moves well, and the visual narrative is at least descriptive as the text. The book is well printed, giving Moeller's art every chance to show itself off. Maybe it's not a great comic, but greatness is rare. It's still good.
As near as I can tell, these collections of the original DC comics are just coming out now, around the time I write this. I usually like the collected-comic format, because I don't have to wait a month for the story to continue. Now, though, I have to wait for the next collection! Based on what I've seen to date, the wait will be worthwhile.
Moeller has done a good job here, and I look forward to seeing more of his work.
