How can you know what a terrorist thinks?

The Western media are so busy analyzing who, what, where, when and how that they never answer the question of why. This book is about the why behind Islamic terrorism.

Terrorists have written many books and pamphlets explaining their position, but most westerners are unable to understand them. Dr. Mark Gabriel makes a major breakthrough by identifying the five pillars of radical philosophy- the bedrock beliefs that cut through all radical writings. Dr. Gabriel uses the writings of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and others to show how terrorists justify their actions through the Quran, the life of Muhammad and Islamic history. Finally, Dr. Gabriel describes how earlier terrorist groups were stopped and shows how the world can work together to stop the terrorists of today.

Ignorance is no ally in the struggle against Islamic terrorism.

Go beyond what is happening and find out why it is happening. The struggle against terrorism may seem to be at a stalemate, but there is hope for the future.

Review

"The major contribution of this book is my own English translations of the four most important written documents produced by the terrorists of today. You will not find these books on Amazon.com or posted on the Internet. Every law enforcement officer, FBI agent, and government official needs to know what these books say,"

This one of the earliest books by Doctor Gabriel, and one of my favorites for those who in the West who are in academia, Intelligence in fact, I highly recommend it as mandatory reading for everyone in the US government, military etc. Actually, every single American, none Muslim even Muslims can stand to learn lots about the agenda, end game, true motivations and roots for this global conflict that the US leaders refuse to call it what it is, a religious war against ALL none Muslims that was initiated by Mohammad 14 centuries ago.
This book is well outlined, nicely written and provides a wealth of accurate referential material on Islam's history of world conquest. Read it, check the facts and judge for yourselves.

Very easy read; like listening to the author speak. Whether you agree or not with his premises, you cannot dispute the validity of his insight. I've studied terrorism for years and cited Dr Gabriel's books in my doctoral dissertation numerous times.

I have also read Mark A Gabriel's book "Islam and Terrorism", which I highly recommend, and this book was a follow-on purchase after reading his other book.

Having already read "Islam and Terrorism", I felt that there was a considerable amount of 'repeat' in this book, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Had I read this book first, I might have given it 5 stars.

This book clarified for me what and how the cycle of Terrorism goes, and why it seems to not stop.

My primary takeaway from this book is primarily a realization that Islam can only change from within.

My second takeaway is a relatively complete understanding of the historical placement of terroristic movements, from pre-WWI history, as well as movements and actions taken by various cells including the Berlin Olympics and Egyptian imprisonments. As a westerner, I have never understood the context of what I had witnessed and read about in the newspapers or seen on TV. I couldn't make 'sense' of what was being reported, because of how it is reported to westerners. But this book gave me the context to understand a bit of the Islamic world's forces from within, and now what is happening in the middle east all just seems 'elementary' to me.

So, this book is 'detail' and 'context' that is deeper than his earlier work of "Islam and Terrorism", and if I were to do it again, I would still read "Islam and Terrorism" first, and then I would still read this one too, because it has invaluable context. Together they should be a primer for every westerner to understanding what is going on in the Middle East.

This book is an excellent and thorough coverage of the specific Quranic texts that Islamic terrorists were influenced by to be what they are and cite as their justification. Dr Gabriel is imminently qualified to make this judgement, because he was after an authorized and esteemed scholar of these texts and authorized as an Imam to preach them, before he converted to Christianity. He is now apparently and equally thorough scholar of the New Testament and an evangelist. A high point of his study, glossed over rather too briefly, is has analysis of "how Muslim" are various segments of Muslim populations, with his estimated percentages by how thorough is their knowledge in an indeed interest study of the Quran. The major premise of his study is that the specific content - the presumed defined authority - of the Quran is their commandment to do what they do. This premise is logical for Dr.Gabriel, since his whole career is study of revealed scriptures - first Islamic and now Christian. What he glosses over is the fact - cited by his own statistics - that quite a large majority of Muslims do know know, study or care about the Quran's literal content to the extent that has been his career.
One must keep in mind that, although there are probably tens of thousands of active and supporting jihadist fanatics on the loose, the other 90+ percent of all Muslims do not participate in or support the Jihad. In fact, from statistics around the World, 99% of the victims of jihadist violence are other Moslims. The danger in this book is that it is excellent fuel for the fires scripture-based Islamophobia.
I heartily support Dr. Gabriel's conclusion that main defense against proliferating jihadist thinking is the rise of secular, democratic societies, in which people can find a wider range of value bases than scriptural fundamentalism to guide their lives. This is what he believed was evolving in 2006, when the book was published, near the end of the US active military involvement in Iraq. This is why his dedication of his book to George W. Bush. His book is thus prophetic in that the rise of AlQaida and Isis have happened with the retreat of US forces from Iraq, the resumption of sectarian warfare there and the reversal of the progress made by that war.

I am thankful to Mark Gabriel for his writings. As a Christian I have recommended Jesus and Mohammed to many. Now with ISIS a challenge I will be recommending this book often. I have already planned to do a second read soon.

An informative book, worth reading. However it seemed to me that having establishing the case that Muslim terrorists are in fact following the teachings of the Koran and example of Muhammad, his solution was for a 21st Century reinterpretation of the Koran. This would amount to a rewriting of the Koran and I suspect no conservative and dedicated Muslim would ever consider this an option! Nevertheless, the book is a recommended read. I hope Dr. Gabriel continues to write on the subject of Islam.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wel erg vanuit een conservatief-christelijk perspectief gedacht.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Islam

The author of this book is a former professor of Islamic studies who was forced to leave his native Egypt due to his conversion to Christianity. The book shows the truth about Islam and its aspirations to world domination. All of its assertions are strongly supported with quotes from the most respected Islamic texts, including the Koran, of course.

Mark Gabriel has written the following booksl:
1. Against The Tides In The Middle East (1997)
2. Islam and Terrorism - first edition (2002); second edition (2015)
3. Islam and the Jews (2003)
4. Jesus and Muhammad (2004)
5. Journey Into the Mind of an Islamic Terrorist (2006)
6. Culture Clash (2007)
7. Coffee with the Prophet (2008)
“Against The Tides In The Middle East” is the first book by Mustafa (alias Mark Gabriel) to tell the remarkable story of his life. Each successive book seems to progressively reveal a little more detail about this life, so, by the time you get to the final book, you have a pretty complete picture of this remarkable transformation. Even if you’re an atheist, it’s difficult to begrudge the happiness he’s found for himself in Jesus.
Gabriel’s fifth book is much better organised than his first book, telling the chilling truth about the historcal development of radical Islam in the Middle-East. There's a certain amount of crossover between this book and "Islam and Terrorism". If you're interested in Islamic fundamentalism then you probably need to read both - starting, as I did, with "Islam and Terrorism". As with all Gabriel's books except his first, it's an easy read; but prepare yourself for the nightmares afterwards.
