Journey Into The Mind Of an Islamic Terrorist: Why They Hate Us and How We Can Change Their Minds Paperback – December 13, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
The Western media are so busy analyzing who, what, where, when and how that they never answer the question of why. This book is about the why behind Islamic terrorism.
Terrorists have written many books and pamphlets explaining their position, but most westerners are unable to understand them. Dr. Mark Gabriel makes a major breakthrough by identifying the five pillars of radical philosophy- the bedrock beliefs that cut through all radical writings. Dr. Gabriel uses the writings of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and others to show how terrorists justify their actions through the Quran, the life of Muhammad and Islamic history. Finally, Dr. Gabriel describes how earlier terrorist groups were stopped and shows how the world can work together to stop the terrorists of today.
Ignorance is no ally in the struggle against Islamic terrorism.
Go beyond what is happening and find out why it is happening. The struggle against terrorism may seem to be at a stalemate, but there is hope for the future.

About the Author
After earning a Ph.D. in Islamic history, Mark A. Gabriel became convinced that Muhammad did not speak for God. His search for truth led to the love of Jesus Christ, as well as complete rejection from his family and two attempts against his life by political fundamentalists. Now pursuing a Ph.D. in world religion at a Christian university, he speaks and writes about the true nature of Islam with the non-emotional accuracy of an academician. As a reflection of his new life in Christ, he has chosen a Christian name to replace his Islamic name.

This book is well outlined, nicely written and provides a wealth of accurate referential material on Islam's history of world conquest. Read it, check the facts and judge for yourselves.
Having already read "Islam and Terrorism", I felt that there was a considerable amount of 'repeat' in this book, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Had I read this book first, I might have given it 5 stars.
This book clarified for me what and how the cycle of Terrorism goes, and why it seems to not stop.
My primary takeaway from this book is primarily a realization that Islam can only change from within.
My second takeaway is a relatively complete understanding of the historical placement of terroristic movements, from pre-WWI history, as well as movements and actions taken by various cells including the Berlin Olympics and Egyptian imprisonments. As a westerner, I have never understood the context of what I had witnessed and read about in the newspapers or seen on TV. I couldn't make 'sense' of what was being reported, because of how it is reported to westerners. But this book gave me the context to understand a bit of the Islamic world's forces from within, and now what is happening in the middle east all just seems 'elementary' to me.
So, this book is 'detail' and 'context' that is deeper than his earlier work of "Islam and Terrorism", and if I were to do it again, I would still read "Islam and Terrorism" first, and then I would still read this one too, because it has invaluable context. Together they should be a primer for every westerner to understanding what is going on in the Middle East.
One must keep in mind that, although there are probably tens of thousands of active and supporting jihadist fanatics on the loose, the other 90+ percent of all Muslims do not participate in or support the Jihad. In fact, from statistics around the World, 99% of the victims of jihadist violence are other Moslims. The danger in this book is that it is excellent fuel for the fires scripture-based Islamophobia.
I heartily support Dr. Gabriel's conclusion that main defense against proliferating jihadist thinking is the rise of secular, democratic societies, in which people can find a wider range of value bases than scriptural fundamentalism to guide their lives. This is what he believed was evolving in 2006, when the book was published, near the end of the US active military involvement in Iraq. This is why his dedication of his book to George W. Bush. His book is thus prophetic in that the rise of AlQaida and Isis have happened with the retreat of US forces from Iraq, the resumption of sectarian warfare there and the reversal of the progress made by that war.

“Against The Tides In The Middle East” is the first book by Mustafa (alias Mark Gabriel) to tell the remarkable story of his life. Each successive book seems to progressively reveal a little more detail about this life, so, by the time you get to the final book, you have a pretty complete picture of this remarkable transformation. Even if you’re an atheist, it’s difficult to begrudge the happiness he’s found for himself in Jesus.
Gabriel’s fifth book is much better organised than his first book, telling the chilling truth about the historcal development of radical Islam in the Middle-East. There's a certain amount of crossover between this book and "Islam and Terrorism". If you're interested in Islamic fundamentalism then you probably need to read both - starting, as I did, with "Islam and Terrorism". As with all Gabriel's books except his first, it's an easy read; but prepare yourself for the nightmares afterwards.
