Totally worth it. It's nice getting to see the series again from a different perspective.

Let me clear the air, before I get trashed by the igorant clowns on here who think they know everything. THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME READING A MANGA! So before you trash my review saying that I dont know anything, or commenting with a long in depth analysis of how I dont know what i'm talking about keep that in mind.

I really enjoyed this manga, it was very fast paced and I found it very exciting. I had never read a Manga before this and now, I find my self buying them more and more as I find not only the story linem but the social commentaries highly intruiging. I read this manga while on the bus it took me about a half hour to finish, it goes by very quickly and when you get to the end, you are so mad that you dont have Vol 2 ready to read because you are dying to know what happens.

I am interested to keep reading so I can find out what the hell an 'Angel' is and what humanity and NERV in general plans to do about them. After reading this I now absolutly want to see the Anime, as this volume has intruiged me so much.

The storyline is very straight forward, it follows a kid named Shinji who is clearly psychologyically damaged and who clearly has some sort of father issues, the main character is an interesting case as he could have stepped straight out of the pages of Freud's own psychology notes. This kid, hates life, he hates absolutly everything, but he is summoned by his father who he thinks abandonded him to save humanity from the attacking Angels.

I loved the social commentary that was made in this novel. One of the most powerful for me was very in tune with Utilitarian philosophy, in which it is necessary to sacrifice a small number to save the majority. This is first inherent when the first of the human's Mechas self-destructs effectively nuking the whole city in an attempt to destroy the angel. This was a powerful scene showing that the miliatryw ould sacrifice anything at any cost to obtain its objective eveen if it means killing innocent people, this was brilliantly juxtaposed in the next scene with a discussion on budgets and finances and a complaint that the general is spedning taxpayer money, this hints at almost a diabolical nature of the government (this is shown otherwise and was a real shock to me, a great twist!).

I also found an interesting commentary on the self-view of the writer as a Japanese person. He makes constant reference to his "small island" in diminutive forms, but intertwines that with the very essence that it is the Japanese government who is the spearhead for humanity against the Angels. This is a genius technique of contrasting the worldview of Japan with his own nationalism... brilliant!

I found the drawings in the manga really good, however I was alittle confused with the battle scenes as they seemed quite convoluted and confusing as to what was going on. My other complaint is there are times where I can't help but the hate Shinji. There are certain aspects of him that remind me of Hope from Final Fantasy XIII, him being a gigantic self centered, self obsessed brat, and I hate when Animae characters are protrayed like that as it annoys me, to the point where I hope that he does get killed! Certain bratty, arrogant actions of Shinjis make you want to throw the book out the window in anger, however a few pages later he rectifies them and redeems himself. While the damaged hero concept was a wonderful addition,I found certain charictaristcs of Shinji exceptionally irritating.

Definately go and buy this! This is a great Manga, you will love it!

Has some details that were left out of the anime. It was worth reading to find those details in the manga.

My 9,5/10 mangaupdates review: I prefer the Eva manga to the anime/movie source material which may be sacrilegious but isn't it weird that 5 movies, countless other awful manga/games and so on happened in the amount of time the series took to get to the endgame. The final result is worth any fan's time though as the narrative is clearer and emotional than the source material. The characters are more likable characters too and there are no budget problems or creator breakdowns either which both enhanced and damaged the original vision. The art is also very good and clearly evolves over time.
Update: The series finally ended with the bonus epilogue in Vol. 14. The end is a bit mysterious but i like it and can now finally say that Sadamoto's take is the best version of the franchise (3.33 is a mess so that can't end well) and it took only 20 years (started in 1994 to preview the anime) to finish... All's well that ends well. Your turn now Miura and only [m]Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Define[/m] (9,5/10) can call itself the better mech manga.

Having watch the anime over a decade ago, now collecting the Manga has been a delight the art is great and while the story is basically the same it adds to the animation in great depth :)

4.0 out of 5 stars

"Yes, there's no mistake... it's an angel!"
"I'd rather have you owe me one" (第三巻)
"Four Torpedoes...dead on! Why won't it SINK!?"

4.0 out of 5 stars
