What is the structure of al Qaeda and radical Islamic activity in the United States today? How has it evolved since 9/11? To what extent does domestic radical Islamism pose a threat to US national security at home and abroad? The Investigative Project on Terrorism, founded in 1995 by Steven Emerson, maintains the largest nongovernmental data and intelligence library in the world on militant Islam. The Project assists the White House, the FBI, the Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security, and other government departments with counterterrorism activities. Together with a staff of experts, Executive Director Steven Emerson has compiled this thorough factual overview of the Islamist terrorist threat to the United States. Unlike The 9/11 Commission Report, which was focused mainly on the retrospective analysis of al Qaeda activities leading up to the attack of September 11, 2001, Jihad Incorporated provides an in-depth examination of radical terrorist organizations and their financial support networks operating in the United States and abroad. Divided into three sections, the work first sets the stage for the current situation by reviewing the lessons learned from previous terrorist plots and attacks both within our borders and against American interests abroad. Emerson and colleagues profile key players in the terrorist network and describe their various criminal activities before and since 9/11. The second section analyzes organizations in the Middle East besides al Qaeda that have established ties in the United States: Hamas, Hizballah, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and radical groups in Pakistan. The third section analyzes the subtle, wide-ranging support system for terrorist activities that exists within our own borders: charities and foundations that secretly solicit for terror; the complex corporate web of companies, charities, and nonprofit corporations known as the SAAR Network; mosques that provide cover for terrorists; the use of the Internet for terrorist communication; and lobbying efforts by Muslim American organizations to influence the top echelons of the federal government. In a dangerous age, this is an important book for all Americans to read.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Emerson is a somewhat controversial independent journalist who dedicated his career to alerting the public and the government about Islamic terrorism well before the 9/11 attacks. Consistent with his recent American Jihad: The Terrorists Living among Us (2002), which warned of domestic threats (as well as chronicling Emerson's struggle to convince a skeptical public), his latest selection vociferously asserts that terrorists "have insinuated themselves in the structure of American society," pursuing violent ends through "advocacy groups, an array of disingenuous charities and foundations, corporate financing networks, and the halls of academia." Here, Emerson matter-of-factly names and catalogs a host of such organizations and narrates each group's specific activities, footnoted to news articles and government reports. Given the nature of the topic, it is difficult to tell which of Emerson's many claims are credible and which err on the side of overstatement (something Emerson has been accused of before). This book will be most sought after by readers hungry for factual specifics about possible threats rather than for more nuanced theoretical or historical approaches to the topic. Brendan Driscoll

Review

""Jihad Incorporated...is the seminal, comprehensive resource on radical Islam in the United States documenting the post-9/11 machinations of terrorist operatives and front groups inside our borders, from al-Qaeda and its affiliates to Hamas and Hizballah....Emerson provides key insights into current dilemmas faced by counterterrorism officials....a must-read for law enforcement, academics, government officials, and concerned citizens alike....essential reading in any serious effort to better understand the character and evolution of militant Islam." JOURNAL OF COUNTERTERRORISM AND HOMELAND SECURITY INTERNATIONAL “Jihad Incorporated is an incredibly informative look into the infiltration of terrorism into American society both before and after 9/11. The extent of the radical activity here in the United States that is uncovered by Emerson’s book is truly eye opening.... A scary reminder of the prevalence of terrorism in American society.” RICHARD CLARKE Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Security Group (1992-2003)

If you want to understand the extent to which Islamist organizations have insinuated themselves in America, this is a MUST READ!!! Steve Emerson is the guy that the Fed's called after 9/11 to help explain what just happened and who might have done it. The evidence is clear and fully sourced. If you have that 'funny feeling' about Islamist organizations in the USA this is the most comprehensive source you can access. Steve Emerson's organization and the information they make available is invaluable.....if just we made ourselves aware of it.

I'm on chapter 10 right now. Absolutely chilling documentation of how well organized and funded the Mujis are. I'm looking forward to seeing what has happened since 06 (when the book was published).

A good book to read and to give to your children to read. This book helps to fill some of the knowledge that the media refuses to publish.

There's little argument that Steve Emerson is a, if not the, preeminent American authority on Jihad in America. It was in this context that I placed an order for Jihad Incorporated.

However, rather than a series of enlightening tales of muslim infiltration and terror plots, this reads more like the work of a forensic accountant.

Personally, I found the endless people with various permutations of names including the word "Mohamed" and literally hundreds of heretofore unknown organizations with "names" that are more accurately called "sounds" to be mind boggling.

It's probably a good reference book for Intel Professionals who already track these individuals and organizations, but short of that, it's not a good read for the layperson.

This book is like a history lesson, a long, long, long history lesson on the inside workings of Jihad. It will fascinate you, and you will learn things you never knew existed from the world of Islam. I highly recommend this book.
