Over the years, Pema Chödrön's books have offered readers an exciting new way of living: developing fearlessness, generosity, and compassion in all aspects of their lives. In No Time to Lose Pema invites readers to venture further along the path of the "bodhisattva warrior," explaining in depth how we can awaken the softness of our hearts and develop true confidence amid the challenges of daily living.

Pema reveals the traditional Buddhist teachings that guide her own life: those of
The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara), a text written by the eighth-century sage Shantideva. This treasured Buddhist work is remarkably relevant for our times, describing the steps we can take to cultivate courage, caring, and joy—the keys to healing ourselves and our troubled world. Pema offers us a highly practical and engaging commentary on this essential text, explaining how its profound teachings can be applied to our daily lives.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Chödrön’s commentary on Shantideva’s text is wise yet humble, and always encouraging.”—Yoga Journal

No Time to Lose represents the fruition of Chödrön’s years of practice and study: a traditional commentary in which passages from The Way of the Bodhisattva are interspersed with her ever-approachable and pithy instructions for daily life.”—Parabola

“Chödrön provides consistently clear expositions of Shantideva’s sometimes convoluted verses and lines of argument, keeping her eye firmly on the question of how his discussion is relevant to the lives of ordinary people living in modern societies.  A superlative presentation of the text.”—
Buddhadharma

“In this ambitious and profound work, Chödrön hits high stride, creating a wide-ranging, accessible, and soul-stirring commentary on the classic Buddhist text
The Way of the Bodhisattva.”—Spirituality and Health

“Chödrön is a clear teacher, explaining key terms and making things simple and characteristically plainspoken.  She is also the right kind of motivator, telling readers immediately what’s in it for them: this book can inspire those who want to make the world a better place.”—
Publishers Weekly

“Pema Chödrön’s writings have been helpful to countless numbers of people trying to find some ground for their being in this chaotic world.”—Bill Moyers

Don’t buy if you have No Time To Lose. This is a reissue with a different title.

That said, this is a remarkably insightful commentary by the Ven. Pema Chodron. Shantideva’s Way of the Bodhisattva is a beloved root text. Ani Pema brings it to life in a way that allows us to have access to Shantideva’s teachings for our use today.

This text does not include commentary on Shantideva’s final Chapter, which would be a full book in and of itself.

So grateful to be studying these materials!

I recently discovered Pema Chodron and have read many of her books and listened to her talks. However, for me, this book is at the top. She mentions Shantideva's 9th Chapter on Wisdom which is Not presented here and I think there is a great need to hear her presentation of it to complete the text. Perhaps she has already published it and I am not aware. She communicates on such a human level and with true clarity that practically every paragraph has relevance to our lives which can actually be practiced. By hearing Shantideva's experience and insight into the human condition you may gleam a better understanding of your own.

I came across this book when i read an excerpt fro it in a collection of Buddhist works. I had been going through some tough personal issues, mostly of my own doing. I happened to read an excerpt on a whim and found it fascinating and really on target with what I had been dealing with. From there I decided to purchase the entire book and, although I havent quite finished yet (as I find myself stopping to reflect quite a bit), this book has taught me a new way to think about life and how to deal with the "restless mind" and "habitual thought patterns". This book can be very useful to anyone interested in discovering some of the mysteries of the mind. Highly recommended!

In our very busy day, and high tech always connected world, these were spot on CDs to listen to coming or going to work. It will be amazing I think, to see how much you can listen to on a CD just doing errands around town. It is like having a caring friend, or coach talking to you to inspire, calm, and point you off in the path you need to flow. Each time I listen, I gathered something new to learn. Sometimes, a new thing to revisit from a different view. Pema is like that you know. I have been hooked on her books and CDs to supplement my reading, and yoga and meditation. We are a work in progress. Enjoy and Namaste'

I wanted to read "The Way of the Bodhisattva" but felt I needed a guide that was oriented to Westerners. This is the guide! It is easily comprehensible but thorough and does not appear to dumb down the material. I combined this with "For the Benefit of All Beings" by the Dalai Lama (also available through Amazon) which is a little bit more sophisticated and less a step by step guide. I find that using at least two sources in my study of Buddhist teachings keeps me from rabbiting off in the wrong direction.
I originally purchased "No Time to Lose" in the Kindle format but purchased a hard copy so I could add copious notes!

I have read most of Pema Chödrön's other writings and have found them wonderfully accessible, encouraging, and profound. "No Time To Lose" was a little intimidating to me though given the subject matter and its length compared to her other books. I'm glad I didn't let my hesitancy get the best of me. Though I'm still reading it, her tone and wisdom ring through...

This is one of my favorite books. It's all me through a difficult time when a family member was recovering from an accident in another state. This book reinforces personal well-being on an inner level, and encourages a no nonsense approach to holding on to a joyous Spirit perspective while encountering challenges in the world of changes. Pema Chodron illuminates a timeless Buddhist text by Shantidevi and makes the knowledge available to us with a Western train of thought.

It's not really what i thought it would be, for me is a little tedious because she translate what Shantideva said text by text BUT the teachings are awesome and every night i read a little anyway.

Pema Chodron's lucidity places Shantideva's 'The Way of the Bodhisattva' in contemporary context with insight into the ways we block our innate joy and compassion, highlighting our neuroses the practice reveals. Becoming Bodhissatvas: A Guidebook for Compassionate Action has been very helpful and enormously encouraging. A dear friendly companion and guide on the path.

Pema Chodron is an amazing teacher and fellow human being. No judgement, no "I'm holier then thou" self-elevation, and completely simple yet profound teaching accessible by every single person from the "novice" to the "learned". After readying one of her book, I went right back and purchased every single other Pema book available on Amazon. She is The Woman!!

Although the book is dense / intense, and not an easy or quick read for novices, it is beautifully written and encourages readers to take action. It encouraged me to donate to earthquake victims, which maybe I would not have done or perhaps may have done later, if I hadn't read this book now.
