Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Zollinger’s Golden Spur Award–winning first novel, originally published in 1977 but long out of print, returns. The story begins in 1900: Ignacio Ortiz, a young Mexican orphan, vows to cross the Rio Grande and find a life for himself in a new country. We follow him as he grows from boy into man, but it’s not just his story; it’s also the story of his adopted home in the first half of the twentieth century. It’s a time of massive upheavals—two world wars, the creation of entirely new social classes—and the author reflects thoses changes in Ignacio’s smaller world of the D Cross A ranch and the MacAndrews clan, his employers, friends, and adopted family. Readers who fondly remember the book will enjoy the chance to become reacquainted with Zollinger’s wonderful characters; first-time readers will plunge into it with both feet. It is a rich, memorable story not just about a boy’s transition to adulthood but also about the maturing of a country. This is a good choice for fans of literary westerns, but it also has definite crossover appeal to readers of general fiction. --David Pitt

Story: Ignacio Ortiz shows up in New Mexico in 1905 at the age of 15, and he goes to work for Douglas MacAndrews, who owns the D cross A ranch. Ignacio stays there the rest of his life, another 50 or 55 years. While other people are flashy and get more attention, Ignacio is steadfast, honest, and his quiet courage is breathtaking. Ignacio Ortiz is the embodiment of stoicism.

This is one the best books I have read in awhile, and I highly recommend it.

Having lived in central New Mexico for nearly 38 years, I can think of no excuse for having ignored this locally famous novel years ago. I chose to read it aloud -- about 10 pages at a time -- to a small group at our local nursing home, folks who became so engrossed in the story and the well-drawn characters that I didn't dare miss a session of our three-days-per-week "book club."

I chose this book because of my knowledge of the author, Norman Zollinger. I have enjoyed several books by this author. His work is sometimes historical fiction, well researched & written. In addition to the reading enjoyment, many things have been learned from reading Zollinger's works.

I was happy to see this reprint of Norman's best novel, and one of my top five favorites. It has a style almost literary, but in all an amazing depth of character and profound story.

Nash ranks in there with characters like Monte Walsh and Gus MacCrae. The book had a profound effect on me, causing me to review my own past. I'd love to have a hardcover copy of the sequel, "Passage to Quivira." Tks.

I just completed this book; I'm a little stunned by it. It is epic! Not just the usual Western. If you're expecting a Louis L'Amour novel you're about to get some of that plus a whole lot more. Odd thing: it begins with the kind of accessibility and simple plot development usually found in juvenile literature, but quickly becomes subtle and sophisticated. This psychologically complex, doom-laden, unforgiving novel reminded me a lot of Thomas Mann's "Buddenbrooks," the tale of the fall of a German family over four generations.

Highly recommended. I can see why it won the 1978 Spur Award for Best Western Novel.
