Review

"One of the foremost writers of naval fiction."  —The Sunday Times of London

"Not even C.S. Forester knows more about the routine and battle procedures of the British Navy in the days of Nelson."  —
The New York Times

From the Publisher

Dudley Pope is well known, both as the creator of the Ramage novels and as a distinguished naval historian. Pope falsified his age in order to enlist in the British Merchant Navy during World War II. In action, his ship was torpedoed and he spent 14 days at sea in an open lifeboat. After being discharged due to the injuries he received, he worked as the naval and defense correspondent at the London Daily News. He turned to writing fiction at the urging of C. S. Forester, who viewed Pope as his creative heir. Author of ten scholarly works as well as the 18 books in the Ramage series, Dudley Pope died in 1997.

This is a great series and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes action and adventure books. This series happens to be written by a navel historian so its historical accuracy adds a great deal of value to the books. However the "procedural" aspect can get a bit tedious. He wrote 18 but was supposed to write 22. Unfortunately he died before he completed the series. I am hopeful that the publisher will find someone to pick up where Mr Pope left off because there is much unfinished business.

Of all the fictional naval captains, Captain Lord Ramage is the most adored by his men. He is the alter ego of the real Admiral Lord Nelson, victor of Trafalgar and hero of the British Navy and of the English people. With his many victories and prizes, Ramage by now should be too rich to sail, but here he is in his 15th book and still only a Post Captain. But we'll allow that because frigate captains have all the fun, and admirals of advancing age equally late in their series, like Kent's Bolitho or O'Brian's Aubrey, have too many remote worries.
The main story line is a convoy back to England and its plodding operations overseen by Ramage, torn by a bizarre meet with another British frigate. Although newly married, Ramage struggles with an infatuation with a lady of the convoy. There's also the strangest case of mutiny I've ever read. Haled into court, Ramage is court martialled for his life, with an infuriatingly biased judge guiding his fate. Throughout there overhangs the disturbing worry that Ramage's bride (of the previous novel Ramage's Devil) has been lost at sea. Paul Wright's cover painting is the weakest in his series, a lethargic stern chase.

All the books are good reading . Love history of old sailing ships. Our youth today need to know the courage and strength it took to sail those ships. - and the knowledge of the sea, weather , etc.
My husband ( now deceased) and I sailed on the HMS Rose. So I know.

A classic Ramage novel. Ramage's Trial is well written, suspenseful, and enjoyable. I have read all through Volume 14 and have enjoyed everyone. A classic telling of England's navy in the Napoleanic period.

Pope as always, tries to bring to the reader all the many details of even the most mundane activities on board a King's ship. He doesn't disappoint in this account of a British Naval Court martial in which Ramage gets involved in the most bizarre circumstance imaginable which puts his career, if not his life in jeopardy. I had no ideas how the story would turn. JC Yuill

It has been a series of enjoyable novels. Also I have learned a lot of history and geography.

Another hit for Dudley Pope, who has a knack for coming up with very unusual situations and then very cleverly working through the problem and giving us a satisfying ending. Many of his stories have some basis in fiact; I'm not sure if this is one of them but many of the elements do have a ring of truth to them.

The story of the trial is good, but Pope wastes space - and my time - with minor character discussions, mostly related to pre- or planned post- Navy activities. They seemed like filler. Pope introduced a new female character who is interesting - I will read more to see if she shows up again, and to discover what became of Sarah and Gianna.

If you have read any of the Ramage series of books, it it up to the usual standard -- a bit slow to start but nevertheless, a good read.
