Included in this book are such invaluable techniques as: How to make a whip-finish and half hitch with ease; tying legs on nymphs and emergers; how to tie terrestrial patterns for specific streams; anchoring synthetic materials to the hook; an easy way to prevent a wing from slipping forward; the best way to tie a Buskin Crayfish; fishing tips for all patterns and water types and much more. You'll also learn how to tie emergers, nymphs, wet flies, terrestrials, conventional dry flies, spentwings, down-wings, parachutes, streamers, bucktails, and Stimulator-type patterns. All told, Meck gives you detailed instructions for tying more than forty-one highly productive patterns. (6 x 9 1/4, 208 pages, color photos, diagrams, charts)Charles R. Meck has fly-fished for more than fifty years. He has written nine books on the subject, including Meeting and Fishing the Hatches and Pennsylvania Trout Streams and Their Hatches. He has taught fly tying and fishing in Canada, New Zealand, and more than twenty states, and has written more than five hundred magazine and newspaper articles on fly fishing. I am a beginner, and this was clear. Easier than learning from some cranky old fisherman for sure.

I have heard Charlie Meck talk, and I know what authority he brings to his subject. I bought this book with the expectation that I could pick up some of his tricks. Unfortunately, the illustrations are small, dark, and very poorly reproduced. The publisher obviously skimped on quality to keep the price down, and it was not a good decision!
Compared to some of the other excellant tying books on the market, this is not a volume that will help the intermediate tyer in search of advanced techniques. I was disappointed.

After reading "How to Catch More Trout", the practical fly fisher's "bible", I awaited the publication of "101 Innovative Fly Tying Tips" with much anticipation. It was well worth the wait. Meck's latest effort is the practical fly tyer's bible. Meck collected years of tips and innovations and shares them in this book. He takes many of the "top" patterns discussed in "How to Catch More Trout", and tells us the easiest, quickest, and most durable way to tie them. He also adds his tips for fishing many of the patterns. Meck also gives away some of Pennsylvania's local secrets learned from great guides like Kurt Thomas. If you ever wanted to find out how some of the country's best guides and fly fishers tie their patterns, and which ones they consistently use, this book provides answers. If you love fly fishing for trout as much as me, and are at the stage where you want to cut to the chase, you'll love this book.

BERNARD BAZIN
3.0 out of 5 stars Un bon livre pour les monteurs expérimentés
Reviewed in France on December 19, 2003
