Jane Goodall: 50 Years at Gombe Hardcover – October 1, 2010

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 169 ratings

An updated, photo-filled account of a half century working with chimpanzees in East Africa by the renowned primatologist.

In honor of the field site’s fiftieth anniversary,
Jane Goodall: 50 Years at Gombe is a compelling pictorial tribute to Dr. Goodall’s life, her studies of chimpanzee behavior, and her unflagging efforts to motivate people to make this world a better place. With new photographs and updated text throughout, this revised edition retraces five decades of compassion and discovery.

Though the book covers a half century, the accomplishments of the past ten years alone have given the Jane Goodall Institute a great deal to celebrate. Recounted are endeavors at the Gombe field site including landmark research related to AIDS progression; establishing programs to improve sanitation, health care, and education in neighboring Tanzanian communities; and partnering with local people to pursue reforestation initiatives.

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, is an iconic voice for holistic, compassionate, and sustainable solutions. Through her global advocacy as an ethologist and environmentalist, she is shaping attitudes and policy on issues ranging from human rights to the climate crisis, and inspiring action through the power of hope.

Jane Goodall was born on April 3rd, 1934, in London, England. At the age of 26, Jane followed her passion for wildlife and Africa to Gombe, Tanzania. There, under the mentorship of paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey, she began her landmark study of chimpanzees in the wild. Her revelatory observation in 1960 that chimpanzees make and use tools rocked the scientific landscape and forever redefined our understanding of the relationship between humans and other animals.

In 1977, Dr. Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), a global community-led conservation, research, and animal welfare organization to advance her vision of a better future for all. In 1991, Dr. Goodall created Roots & Shoots, JGI's international youth program, now active in more than 60 countries, to develop the compassionate changemakers our world needs.

From scientist to world-renowned activist, Jane has been a leader in the community-led conservation and animal welfare movements for decades.

I recently saw the movie "Jane" in the theaters. This book was a nice exploration into Jane Goodall's research in Gombe. Great photos
of the chimpanzees in the main group and I liked the fact that she gave insight into how the group members were doing after she handed
over the bulk of the research to her team. So glad she is still able to go back occasionally. Her voice to the world about the importance of
respecting nature is so heartwarming.

My 2nd grade granddaughter seems to be obsessed with Jane Goodall and her life with the chimps. She has some videos but the book is perfect for her as she loves to look at the photos and can read parts of the book (loves the chimp's family tree -- reading their names and figuring out how old they were). She kept going back to the book the entire week we spent with them during the holidays. Nice to see her interested in a book!

Seeing the pictures of her life and learning about the activities and progress of the projects that Jane Goodall has been committed to all these years is so heartening in a world that so often seems to not care about much of anything real. Jane's long commitment to the chimps, our closest relatives, is such an inspiring story. The photos, charts and words in this book help to inspire the reader, as well. If you are a fan of Goodall you will love owning this book. You will pick it up again and again.
Thank you Jane Goodall for the world you allowed all of us to be part of. The chimps' world brings us closer to understanding our own selves and the part we must play in our whole world today.

Shorter book than I expected. Very good though.

This is less than a book and more of a report.

I loved "In the Shadow of Man" and "Through a Window", and I can say that "50 years at Gombe" is less about the day-to-day life of the chimpanzees and more about the larger picture - animal protection, ecology and so on. You still get an update on what happened in Gombe, with a nice time-frame and all, and, in the annex, a complete list of Goodall's books and movies.

But that's not why I gave this book less then 5 stars - it's the price, which is a bit steep for the e-book format. If you could get the hardcover, the price would be justified, considering how many wonderful pictures are included.

In the end, I recommend it to anyone that liked the other Goodall's books, but if you are a newcomer you'd better start with "In the Shadow of Man".

Jane Goodall is the most talented woman whose love of animals brought her out to Africa. She observed so many things never witnessed by anyone before! As she knows the calls of the chimpanzies, I also would howl with my coyotes here in the desert. Her love of animals came quite early as did mine. This book is a great document of her many years with the animals in Gombe and her struggles there. Jane is an amazing woman and leader in protecting our wild places.

Jane Goodall is the right type of animal researcher, in that she appreciates our primate cousins but does not degrade the role of humans as some animal rights activists do. This is a good introduction to her life and work. Readers will especially appreciate the role of her mother as the person who encouraged her on her path. Beautiful pictures as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars 50 years at Gombe is ACE, ON TOAST, ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 7, 2014
50 years at Gombe is ACE, ON TOAST, ON ICE. It is a superb record of Goodall's work in glorious photography with some really sexy shots of beloved Jane in her youth roaming the jungle, CLIMBING quite challenging trees and hugging non-human primates. It is a publication not to be missed. Now in her 80s, Jane Goodall no longer climbs trees, but still hugs chimpanzees (do not try this at home since chimpanzees are WILD animals, very strong and can tear your, um, er, ears off). She continues her heroic work in lecturing and trying to turn the tide of habitation destruction and massacre of primates by human primates May she flourish and may God bless her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caring for the apes
Reviewed in France on June 18, 2014
Nothing really new in this book, but a summary of the experiences made at Gombe with the apes.
The reader will find here a bounty of information about the motivation, the circumstances and the progress of a career entirely devoted to the study of our closest kin. A truly remarkable trajectory.
