An important and pioneering book. -- Michael Murphy, pre-publication

About the Author

Deane Juhan was born in 1945 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and educated at the University of Colorado (BA), the University of Michigan (MA), and the University of California at Berkeley (three and a half years as a doctoral candidate in English literature specializing in William Blake). In 1973 an experience with bodywork at Esalen Institute in Big Sur led to a sudden change in career. Joining the staff at Esalen as bodyworker and instructor (where he remained until 1990), he saw dramatic improvements in a wide variety of conditions as a result of hands-on work and movement reeducation. This quickened his interest in clinical research, and years of study of the physiology of touch and its concrete effects on development, adaption, skill learning, and healing eventually produced Job's Body: A Handbook of Bodywork, as well as the essays in his latest book, Touched by the Goddess: the Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual Powers of Bodywork. He is currently a practitioner of the Trager

I've read countless books on body, mind, and spirit. Job's Body takes on the task of consolidating the complexities of all the dimensions of our consciousness, body, mind, spirit. Not just for body workers, an invaluable manual to discover, uncover, educated and arm ourselves with a birds eye and microscopic view of us. Highly recommended. Will be reading it again and again, with notebook in hand. Sharing with friends and applying in my own life as well as my business.

I've had this book for ten years and I still refer to it at least once a week. Jam packed with really great information. Reads like a text book, though, so don't expect to just sit down and read this one front to back, in the bath! Great working reference for all kinds of body workers.

As an author of self help books, registered nurse, and advocate for chronic pain issues, I am always looking for information to broaden my own knowledge base, but that's not the only reason I read books like Job's Body. I happen to be a chronic pain patient. The greatest pain generator for me is a condition we don't hear much about, but we should, myofascial pain syndrome. I am reviewing from a professional and patient perspective.

Deane Juhan does a marvelous job explaining exactly what the skin, connective tissue, bone, muscles, nerve and myofascia are, and why we need them. He methodically and meticulously defines why it is important to know exactly what they do, how everything is connected and how neglect can lead to plasticity of the brain.

Many have written on this, but few explain how neglecting the body's needs create plasticity affecting and rewiring the brains' perception and response. Seldom, if ever, do physicians get training on connective tissue even though it has the greatest effect on chronic pain conditions.

Deane Juhan holds tight to same mantras I use in my own writing "self-awareness, self-control and active participation of the will to the process of growth and development are major themes to this education." Keep the fluid moving, it is the oil for the body, and the dump truck for the toxins we accumulate when we live a stagnant life.

If you are a pain management professional, physical therapist, chiropractor, body worker, or a patient with chronic pain, you must read this book. You will have a better understanding of the myofascia, plasticity, and the feedback our brain receives from the body.

This book is amazing! It has inspired my bodywork practice and my life. This book is very readable and entertaining, not clinical and dry like a textbook. I read it skipping around to different sections and it still made sense, so you can really go at your own pace. It has tons of clinical research to back up the innovative ideas. If you are interested in the human experience of touch, get this book!

One of the most profudnly useful books for those who wish to be partners with their own bodies. I found this enormously helpful in my process of healing from a completely torn hamstring, but it has informed my imagination and appreciation in many ways that go beyond those particular body parts. Beautifully written.

Excellent book which imparts information to both the educated professional and layperson. Highly recommend this book to anyone associated with allopathic or preventative medicine and all massage/bodywork professionals.

This book was part of my massage school curriculum. I tried to really get into it like my teachers, but I had a hard time with the 'fluffy' stuff weaved in and out of this book.
However - the theories and ideas presented are WONDERFUL. The book itself is written in a very thoughtful manner, and I can appreciate that. As a massage therapist, I can appreciate this volume.

While I wouldn't say this is a must read, I think if you have the time, give it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for body workers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 2012
This book is a real must for bodyworkers as it provides great information on anatomy/physiology from our perspective and then even more information.

I am a Sport & Remedial Massage Therapist and was recommended this book by a colleague. To be honest I found the opening chapters a little hard going, but that may just be me getting used to the style of writing. However the sections dealing with the different aspects of the human body were well presented, and in great depth, but always with an idea that this is for bodyworkers.

A great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars la bible du bodyworker et du masseur holistique
Reviewed in France on January 31, 2010

I've just read through the book again, especially to look into the liquid crystal structure of the body again! amazing! what makes this book amazing is indeed this new approach of the body, the last chapters, especially the Mae Wan Ho, still relevant especially Chapter 3 and the explanation of collagen fibers and their possible role...because of their structure and genesis!.

so yes, indeed maybe not a classic physiology book, nor related to bodywork although it is in the psychological and philosophical point of view, with linking to physiology and the way we sense or experience feelings...the author explores all of that, and it's fascinating! i would need a small update probably in the view of all the progress that have been made in the last few decades, but Oschman books will probably update that.

anyway, i'm reading it every few years! and it's still inspiring and amazing!
