The Psychic Vampire Codex: A Manual of Magick and Energy Work Paperback – July 1, 2004
The Psychic Vampire Codex is the first book to examine the phenomenon and experience of modern vampirism completely from the vampire's perspective. Father Sebastiaan, a fellow vampire writes in the foreword that Michelle Belanger's system "introduced a breath of fresh air into the vampire subculture. It freed us to look at ourselves in a new light, and it also helped those outside our community to view us differently. No longer were we parasites or predators . . . we could use our inborn abilities to help people heal." Psychic vampires are people who prey on the vital, human life energies of others. They are not believed to be undead. They are mortal people whose need for energy metaphorically connects them to the lifestealing predators of vampire myth.
In The Psychic Vampire Codex, Michelle Belanger, author and psychic vampire, introduces readers to the fascinating system of energy work used by vampires themselves and provides the actual codex text widely used by the vampire community for instruction in feeding and other techniques. Belanger also examines the ethics of vampirism and offers readers methods of protection from vampires.
The Psychic Vampire Codex explodes all preconceptions and myths about who and what psychic vampires really are and reveals a vital and profound spiritual tradition based on balance, rebirth, and an integral relationship with the spirit world.

METAPHYSICS AND VAMPIRISM
Vampires have titillated our imaginations since Lord Byron imported the conceptto English literature almost two hundred years ago. Prior to that, vampires werecreatures of myth and folklore, ravenous night demons who gave form to that fearthat the living hold for the dead. Folkloric vampires were vile and unlovelycreatures, but through Byron's writings and the writings of his contemporaries,a more romanticized ideal emerged. Through these writings, the vampire becamemore human than monster, more archetype than myth.
The notion of the living dead has lost its horror in our scientific age. However, the figure of the vampire and the concepts it represents have becomefirmly entrenched in the popular imagination. Vampires went from literature tothe stage, from the stage to the cinema, and from the cinema to more modernmediums of expression such as the Internet and computer games. They have servedas the inspiration for music, as mascots for breakfast cereals, and even aswell-known characters on children's television shows.
A little over two centuries ago, the word "vampire" was barely known in theEnglish language. Now, CEOs who line their pockets with the money of thosebeneath them can be likened to vampires in the press. A woman who preys sexuallyon men is often known as a "vamp," and in the nineties there was even a lipstickcolor with that name that intended to evoke that same devilish allure. As thearchetype has integrated itself into popular culture, "vampire" has come to meananyone who preys upon others to sate their own needs.
PSYCHIC VAMPIRES
While the vampires of fiction and folklore are admittedly not real, many occultand metaphysical works have been devoted to a different type of vampire. The"psychic vampire" is a person who preys upon the life energies of others.Psychic vampires are not believed to be undead, but are mortal people whose needfor energy metaphorically connects them to the life-stealing predators of myth.
Dion Fortune, analytic psychologist and member of the Hermetic Order of theGolden Dawn, was one of the first to write openly on the topic of psychicvampirism. In her seminal work, Psychic Self-Defense, she discusses some attacksfrom an astral entity that preyed upon the vital energy of its victims. Shelikened this "astral vampire" to the vampires of myth, suggesting that it wasthe remnant of a powerful magickal worker who had refused to succumb to theSecond Death, or death of the subtle body. Later in the same work, Fortunediscusses unintentional psychic vampires: individuals who prey upon theemotional or vital energies of their partners, eventually weakening the partnerto a point where sickness or even death could result.
That was almost a century ago. In keeping with Fortune's writings, mostmetaphysicians approach psychic vampires as something to be defended against. Most books on the topic suggest that the majority of psychic vampires areunaware of their condition and that they feed upon energy unintentionally. It isgenerally assumed that if a psychic vampire were to become aware of what theywere doing, they would choose not to do it. It is further assumed that the needfor energy arises from some physical or metaphysical weakness, which, onceproperly addressed, would bring the vampirism to an end.
A few rare books, such as Konstantinos's Vampires: The Occult Truth, mentionintentional psychic vampires. These are individuals who are aware of what theyare and who take energy consciously. In general, it is assumed that this is alearned technique and not a behavior arising from a legitimate need. WhileKonstantinos's book does feature some letters written by psychic vampiresthemselves, no book on the market addresses the issue of psychic vampirismcompletely from the vampire's perspective. Yet it is impossible for an outsiderto accurately portray such a way of being.
A thriving community of self-aware psychic vampires exists hidden beneath ourmainstream culture. Many of these people refer to themselves as "vampyres,"using the alternate spelling to differentiate themselves from the vampires offolklore and myth. This vampire subculture is rich and diverse, and its membershave the most reliable information about their experiences. Unfortunately, theirvoices are rarely heard.
CONFUSION AND SECRECY
There are a number of reasons why psychic vampires are not forthcoming abouttheir experiences. First among these is the fact that not all vampiresadequately understand what they are. Because the capacity for psychic vampirismis inborn, most psychic vampires function intuitively. While they may beconscious that they are taking energy, they do not always fully comprehend howor why. Many psychic vampires do not even have a word for themselves until theyencounter descriptions in books such as those on psychic self-defense.
Many psychic vampires are also hesitant to speak openly about themselves forfear of being judged. Throughout almost all of the available literature, psychicvampirism is depicted at best as an affliction and at worst as a consciouschoice to victimize others. As a result, many Pagans, Wiccans, and othermetaphysical practitioners see psychic vampires as a scourge to be protectedagainst, and their opinions on the matter are strongly emotional. It is easierfor most to live in silence than to fight such firmly established prejudice.
Further, some vampires have bought into the negative portrayal so typical of theself-defense literature. Many of them feel ashamed of what they are and whatthis requires them to do. Still others embrace the negativity so completely thatthey make a self-conscious attempt to be dark and "evil." These people divehead-first into the archetype of the vampire—cape, fangs, and all—in a confusedattempt to reconcile themselves with their natures. Neither approach makes suchindividuals willing to discuss what they are with outsiders.
Finally, there is the fact that many psychic vampires have conflictinginterpretations of what they are and what this means. Although there have beenattempts to come to a consensus within the community, there are too many voicescompeting for attention. The resulting cacophony of definitions, theories, andbeliefs insures that very little ever gets officially communicated to anyoneoutside of these debates.
THROUGH VAMPIRE EYES
Psychic vampirism, on the surface, seems pretty cut and dried. Psychic vampiresare people who take energy. Some of them do this consciously; some of them do itunawares. However, it is only from an outside perspective that this simplicitycan be maintained. Among the psychic vampires themselves, there are manydifferent reasons for vampirism and many different interpretations of how it isexpressed.
First of all, psychic vampires have many different explanations for why theyneed to feed. Some believe that they feed as a result of a physical or spiritualailment that has reduced their own vitality. In such cases, the need for outsideenergy arises either because the vampire's own system does not produce enoughvital energy to sustain itself or it "leaks" energy, using the energy it doeshave inefficiently.
Some psychic vampires believe that they require outside energy because theyeffectively have a higher spiritual metabolism. They produce vital energywithout a problem, but for some reason they very quickly use up a great deal ofit. Often the vital energy is being burned at a faster rate to fuel psychicabilities, although this is not always the case. Because their systems use upenergy faster than it can be produced, the difference must be made up by takingenergy from others.
Some psychic vampires believe that they have an imperfect connection to theuniversal sources of energy that fuel ordinary people. This can take one of twoforms. Either the vampire's connection to the sources is completely cut off orthey process this energy in a limited or inefficient way. Usually these problemsarise as a result of permanent damage or alterations to the portions of thesubtle body that are connected to these sources of energy and to those thatprocess outside energies for use as vital energy. Weaknesses or blockages in thechakras can have the same effect.
Some vampires believe that they are disconnected from certain sources of energybecause these sources of energy are foreign to them. Vampires from this schoolof thought believe that their spiritual point of origin is elsewhere, and forsome reason they have had difficulty integrating here. Many of these individualsare not cut off from all forms of energy but are limited to a specific narrowrange. Some even purport to have an "allergy" to certain energies that, althoughthey are sustaining to others, can actually cause them harm.
Finally, still other psychic vampires see their condition as the result of amutation or some other genetic inheritance. A small and somewhat radical portionof the community maintains it is the result of a virus. Most discount thistheory, as nearly everyone in the know agrees that psychic vampirism issomething you either have or you don't; you cannot be made into a psychicvampire, nor can you "catch" psychic vampirism from being fed upon. It may seemas if some people "become" psychic vampires, but these individuals are actuallyawakening to a condition that has been latent within them all along.
VAMPIRES AND ENERGY
All beings, vampiric or otherwise, engage in a constant exchange of energy withtheir environment. For the most part, this exchange is unconscious, and it is asinstinctive as breathing. Energy exchange is part of the natural flow of theUniverse, and it serves to connect all living things. Any being that is cut offcompletely from all energetic sources will suffer physically, emotionally, andspiritually.
Certain magickal or metaphysical techniques can help people become aware oftheir relation to energy, and some of these ultimately allow them to consciouslyparticipate in energy exchange. Taking an active role in energy exchange isbeneficial both physically and mentally for any being. Magickal workers, martialartists, and others who channel their energy into extraordinary acts can learnto consciously draw energy from their environment in order to support theiractivities. So what makes a vampire unique?
Among psychic vampires, it is agreed that their nature is defined by need. Whileall beings exchange energy with their environment, there is a certainequilibrium that is nevertheless maintained. The draw of an ordinary person isconstant and low level, barely noticeable to him- or herself or anyone else.Furthermore, ordinary people give as well as take energy, and there is rarely ahuge disparity between the amount given off and the amount taken in.
Psychic vampires require enough energy that they must take significant amountsof it in. The drain this generates is very noticeable, and there is a distinctdisparity between energy intake and outflow. The powerful draw possessed by mostpsychic vampires has inspired some magickal workers to describe them asenergetic "black holes."
Even those vampires who are unconscious of their role in energy exchangenevertheless actively reach out and take additional energy from those aroundthem. This is not a once-in-a-while thing but occurs quite regularly. Awakenedvampires report that they feed on a weekly basis, consciously taking asignificant amount of energy from outside sources. Some feed biweekly, whileothers have such a significant need that they must actively feed every day.Although frequency varies from individual to individual, any psychic vampire whois prevented from taking in more energy than he expends will rapidly suffer aloss of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Not everyone who takes in more energy than they give out is a true vampire, however. Many people can wear themselves out through illness or overwork andconsequently exhibit vampiric tendencies. This increase in energetic need isonly temporary, however. Once the individual's system has regained its state ofequilibrium, energy intake and outflow will become balanced once more. A truevampire requires a regular and significant intake of energy regardless of thestresses on his or her system. The need is constant, not temporary, and simplerest or healing will not suffice to "cure" vampirism.
SOURCES OF ENERGY
There is a school of thought that maintains that psychic vampires can draw uponany form of energy, including natural, elemental, and celestial sources, inorder to fulfill their need. In my opinion, this is not entirely true. The wordvampyre has been adopted by a community of people for a reason, and this isbecause there is a certain amount of resonance between what they experience andwhat they understand a vampire to be. In the myths and folklore, vampires feedupon life, as symbolized through the potent image of blood. Modern-day vampiresdefine themselves as such because they, too, have a need to take the vitallife force from others.

I would easily put this book in league with Crowley's "Magick" and Regardie's "Golden Dawn," Fortune's "Psychic Self-Defense," and Starhawk's "Spiral Dance." Not that The Psychic Vampire Codex shares any similarities to those books as far as content and subject matter goes, but that at the end of the day, if you are looking for a book that has changed and will continue to change how we see the world as magicians, as human beings, and as Vampires, this is it. If you buy only one book on Psychic Vampirism in your life, this should be the one.
Okay, my brutal honesty out of the way, what else is so special about this book? The Psychic Vampire Codex is a book written by, in my opinion, THE expert in the field on the subject. Not to take anything away from our other great elders and eldresses in the Vampire world, but Michelle Belanger, whether you read her works or you see you her on TV, or hear her music, or meet her, one gets the feeling that they are with the authority on the subject. As someone who was a member of the Vampire community going back to 1991, I have met and read a lot of "experts, "but Michelle's works really resonate with me the most: they sound like Truth. What I would have given back in 1991 (or 1987 when I first started to "awaken") to have this book before me, to have Michelle as a teacher, even at the distance of a book. This book is a wise guide into a subject that can, at times, feel isolating, lonely, confusing, consuming, dark, mysterious, and somewhat God-like...as well as "God-less" (if you will forgive me for using the "G word"). The irony here being, in the words of the Gospel of Thomas, "Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel, and will reign over all."
This book does all these things for those who wish to know how to proceed in the world as a Psychic Vampire. The life of a Psychic Vampire can be a complex one, friends I know in the movement (in many of its forms) talk about the complexities of Psychic Vampirism, of the wandering and the not knowing, and the wanting to connect and the hunger of it all, and certainly I have been there myself. Take Joy, however, there is a great guide for this path, the Psychic Vampire Codex. Everything that you could need to know about how this works, where to turn from here, how to live in the world, how to get over yourself (never underestimate the importance of overcoming yourself, your Ego, nor trust an author nor book who doesn't implore you to do so as well from the start), is right here in these pages. Everything is easily and practically explained, but equally as important, without sucking dry (pardon the pun here) the vitality and richness of the driving metaphors and myth-story which also makes this movement, this condition, this practice, so enjoyable. If someone gave you a "Vampirism for Dummies" book, it would lack the spirit of the subject which is as equally important to a movement, to any movement, as the bare bones of the thing. The Psychic Vampire Codex is both practical and dreamy at the same time, again, safely guiding the initiate while also pushing the initiate to the brink of who they are: like a real master.
This book has long nourished me and I believe it will continue to nourish me, as I believe it will also nourish you. If you are looking for answers to who you are and why you have the feelings you do, if you are looking for what is the next step now that you know who you are, if you are looking to check the reality of some fraud on Meet [..] who wants you to sleep with them in order to experience their "Vampire awesomeness," if you are looking to understand how "energy" works on a deep level, if you are looking to expand your consciousness (or have it destroyed, in the positive sense), if you are looking to get deeper into the Vampire movement, or to get into a great Magician's writings, you have found what you are looking for. This book is for you! I give it my highest recommendation.
She starts the book out introducing herself and her personal story, as well as stating that a lot of this work is intended for use by those psychic vampires who are Kheprians. Then she gives a history of the psychic vampire (or psi-vamp) movement, and then about her own efforts in it. She dedicates an entire chapter to an introduction of the actual Codex, including how to use it, defining certain aspects of her wording, and which parts are applicable to whom (Kheprians, other Psi-Vamps, and anyone working with energy).
Then comes the Codex itself, the heart of the book. In this, she gives practical instruction for the psi-vamp about using their abilities, how-to's on various types of feeding, and even the nature of their need for energy. Indeed, she does define the basis for psychic vampirism as a need for energy stemming from, most often, a lack of ability on the part of the psi-vamp to live off most types of subtle energies. This imparts that need to supplement these energies with the vital energy of other living things, most often other human beings. She even postulates that this can give the psi-vamp various psychic abilities naturally that others without that need might have to work for. She even introduces two aspects of working with energy which, while I'd never heard of before, I found I had done many times before in exercises like the Circulation portion of the Qabalistic Middle Pillar exercise.
After the initial Kheprian and psi-vamp focussed parts of the book, she moves on to energy work. And in this part I was most impressed, as I'm not a psychic vampire and couldn't necessarily make the most use out of the Codex. In this section on energy work, she really provides a complete set of basic to intermediate energy working skills along with practical intruction. I think that a few aspects of the energy work as presented by Belanger were depicted in a slightly limiting way. For example, she instructs on how to do a house cleansing, and tells you to do the cleansing with your hands. I've done cleansings by moving energy with my thoughts. Now, while I thought Belanger's approach to things like that were *maybe* limiting, I can see how it would give more focus, and simplicity for those just beginning. The only other beef I had with the energy work she presented was in her treatment on the section on heightening energy. While the discussion about the concept was good, I just didn't feel there was enough practical instruction from the viewpoint of energy working. But overall, the entire portions of the book dedicated to energy work were spledid and are incredibly useful. I've worked with energy for years, and I learned quite a few things from this book.
For the book overall, I really appreciate Belanger's efforts and I applaud her work. She wrote this book in a really nice conversational style that does not get even remotely condescending. In addition, she doesn't dumb it down nor confuse the reader with obscure words and phrasings. From the aspect of energy work, it's not really for the brand new beginner who has had absolutely no exposure to the concepts of subtle energy and working with it. It can, however, definitely be used by the beginner who has at least become familiar with how to move energy. Like I said, I learned a few things from this work, and I considered myself intermediate. This book is more than worth the price.
If you're interested in knowing about psychic vampirism, if you're looking to advance your skills with energy work, or if you're looking for both; get this book!
Michelle was a Vampire the Masquerade enthusiast and so were the other people who are a part of this group of her house — and I was a part of a house too. She inspired me because I saw her on a show about psychics and I realized I was like her too.
This is a very educational and positive book in a world full of darkness. The word “vampire” I don’t associate with myself and yes there are people who are psychic and sanguine vamps out there. I recommend her book and will buy it again. ❤️

In the book she wrote about vampire soul linage which resonated with me a lot.
Also the energy work tips are quite interesting.
It remains one of my favourites, a comforting and informative read which after the first cover-to-cover read, can be easily dipped in and out of.
It opens with a history of vampirism, leading to modern day PSI Vamp lifestyle.. also mentions other literature and magazines that Michelle was involved with previously..and how the following grew and how kindred people came to meet.
Explained is difference between traditional vampires who feed off blood and PSI energy vamps who recycle energy from someone and return it to them, thus healing and enlightening them, a positive and wonderful experience to those sensitive enough to feel it.
Also explained are the main 3 types of PSI vamps including their histories and House Kheperu is explained
Ethics and rules are clearly explained which are inbuilt in most PSI vamps anyway but useful to those who are new to the path or information seekers
If you think PSI vamps are simply people who drain others and best avoided, then you need to educate yourself and this really is the best book to do that, written compassionately and with intelligence - I also love the way Michelle avoids jargon - and there is explanation of terms at the back of the book, if needed.
