Cliques can make you sick. If you’re on the outside, you’re treated like dirt. And if you’re on the inside, you have to follow the rules. Who needs more rules at school?

Written for every kid who has ever felt excluded or trapped by a clique, this book blends humor with practical advice as it tackles a serious subject. Trevor Romain starts by explaining what cliques are and why they exist: because everyone wants to have friends. He reveals why some cliques are so annoying—and often full of phonies. And he shares the secret to being popular: just be yourself!

Trevor knows how to get through to kids. As readers smile at his cartoons and laugh at his jokes, they’ll also be learning skills they need to make and keep friends—real friends, not people who pretend to be cool. They’ll discover that some supposedly “popular” kids are lonely and miserable inside. And they’ll pick up important self-esteem tips that will help them feel good about themselves (because there’s no need to let a bad clique spoil a perfectly good day).

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-8-Youngsters who are sometimes victimized by their peers will appreciate this reassuring and humorous treatment of cliques versus friendship groups, phonies versus real friends, and popularity versus being popular with yourself. Romain defines these concepts, provides examples, and explores commonly held myths about them. With a sense of ease and lighthearted humor (sometimes bordering on the truly silly), the author serves up solid advice in friendly, reassuring prose, often using slang words, such as "Duh!" and "barfed." The book's expressive black-and-white cartoons, open layout, and easy-to-read text will appeal to reluctant readers. A solid purchase.

I purchased all the books from this series to keep in the car so my kids can read them when they're "bored" on longer commutes. They are illustrated and written in a way that is engaging for kids (mine are 7 and 8 years, a boy and a girl) and teach them important life skills that should help improve their coping skills, communication skills, patience, cooperation, and more. I originally found a handful of the books from this series as a homeschooling convention, and came to Amazon to locate the rest. If you're interested in developing your children's character, this is a great series of books.

Bought this for my 8 year old at the advice of an educator. She absolutely devoured it and speaks often of how it helped her understand a particular girl in her class who has been "mentally bullying' a number of kids. We now recognize this kid comes from an overindulgent household with little discipline and does not do well in groups. If this sounds familiar, you'll find great tips for dealing with this and other issues.

My daughter read this in a matter of little over an hour. She says it's good and has practical advice, but it wasn't the longest. Good for younger (maybe pre-teens).

A fun way for older children to learn social skills that they may be lacking. We purchased this to help fill in the gaps for our older adopted son, he struggled with behavioral and social issues and these books help him understand concepts without hurting his self esteem. Fun to read and set in easy to understand and relate scenarios to help children understand.

This is a definately necessity for families wit pre-teens and teens. I read this to my teens, then we have an open discussion about scenarios, given in the chapter, and believe it or not they enjoy it. Regardless of the agenda your child, there is much to gain by the relevant content in this book.

Kids have to deal with Cliques nearly every day in one way or another. They either are part of one and need to learn the difference between the good and the bad or they are victims of the bad ones. This book is excellent in pointing out the differences.

My fourth grade daughter got bored with it quite quickly. Lots of definitions....wasn't very fun for her to continue reading.

This was a bit more simplisitc than I expected. However, this would be good for the elementaryt age set. Not complex enough for what middle school kids are going through.
