Uncover the Secrets to Fly Tying for Lakes

Many fly fishermen find lakes to be vast, intimidating bodies of water. Trout are fussy, the waters are tough to read, and any number of food items could be on the menu. So what do you do?

In Fly Patterns for Stillwater, Phil Rowley uncovers the riches lakes have to offer the patient angler. Phil has spent countless hours studying the food sources that make up the diet of trout; then set up home aquariums to more closely observe the movement, development, and emergence of these aquatic insects. In this book he explains the link between understanding the food base within a lake and designing effective fly patterns for these environs. He includes: Chironomids, scuds, damselflies, leeches, mayflies, caddisflies, water boatmen and backswimmers, terrestrials, beetles, forage fish, and snails. Each chapter begins with a detailed description of the particular food item outlining its life cycle, relative importance, size, coloration, and habits, then proven patterns are given, describing both materials and tying techniques.

Fly Patterns for Stillwaters, will give you the confidence you need to be a successful stillwater angler.

The subtitle, "A Study of Trout, Entomology and Tying", is very descriptive. Philip Rowley begins with a season by season analysis of the diet of trout found in stillwater in BC and the northwestern US. Taking each of the major categories (chironomids, scuds, damselflies, dragonflies, leeches, mayflies, caddisflies, water boatmen, and "hodgepodge") in turn, he describes its life cycle and gives his thoughts on pattern design. For each category, he illustrates five to twelve flies that he has found to be effective imitations, gives step by step tying instructions, and explains how best to fish each fly. The photographs of the natural insects are excellent. The tying instructions are clear and well illustrated. Many of the patterns are original with Mr. Rowley and all can be tied by tyers of any skill level. I have tied and fished many of these patterns and can vouch for their effectiveness. No matter whether this will be your first book about tying flies for stillwater or an addition to an extensive collection, it is a book you will refer to often.

Phil Rowley knows his B.C. stillwaters. And this book offers outstanding advice on feeding preferences, great fly patterns, and how to fish them. If you can buy only one book for B.C. stillwater fishing, this should be it. Oh, it is also excellent material for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Arizona stillwaters. I imagine it would be good for other states too, but I can't say from actual experience.

I've read almost every book on stillwater fishing for Oregon, Washington and B.C., and this is the best of the best.

I found this book to have some excellent information. It covers all the basics but if you have ever read any of Rowley's buddy Chan's books you probably could save a few bucks and go buy some more flies.

Got the book in July and have been very impressed with not only the patterns, but information about the insects being imitated and advice on pattern design. Also advice on how each pattern shjould be fished. I have used some of the patterns already with success and have improved some of my existing patterns using some of the basic premises in the book. Great book for sure, way more than just a book of patterns. These bugs catch fish.

One of the best fly tying books that I have seen.
2 reasons:
1. Step-by-step tying instructions for all patterns - approx. 60 in all.
2. Extensive notes on each pattern with fishing techniques and design background.

I'm not given much to writing reviews but to not give a glowing review to this author would be a disservice. Easily one of the top two books on lake fishing that I have read. Get it not only for the patterns but for the clarity the author brings to lake fishing for trout. His observations on what he has seen and his interpretation of it will take years of off the learning curve of aspiring fly fishermen, especially those that can't be at their favorite lake twice a week. He is a keen observer and a well thought out writer, can't recommend the book enough, not only for the fly tying enthusiast.
