Review

Those who have seen one of Gloria Loughman's award-winning masterpiece quilts and wondered how she did it should buy a copy of this book. It's a fabulously generous resource of guidance on an array of techniques that Gloria uses in her work to such great effect - a veritable workshop in print if you will. Lots of close-up photographs and line drawings illustrate the detailed explanations of her methods. A gallery of student work proves that anyone can make a Gloria Loughman-like quilt, and step-by-step instructions and full-size patterns are included for four small wallhangings so you can too. This book is a very generous gift of knowledge and skills from someone who is a genuine master quiltmaker: simply sensational. -- . ― Australian Homespun Magazine

Australian artist Gloria Loughman has created a comprehensive and thorough guide for quilters just entering the arena of abstract art and design. Both theory and hands-on technique are discussed, and the opening chapters guide the reader thought the basic considerations of design, composition, and color schemes, as well as how to find inspiration in your everyday surroundings. Loughman also leads readers through the construction process step by step; however the author's technical advice goes beyond basic construction to include unusual applique shapes, mosaics, beading, fabric painting, and decorative stitching. A variety of binding and finishing techniques are presented at the end. Also included are four specific projects that enable readers to put their new skills to use (a pull-out pattern section includes the full-size patterns for the four projects). Beginning art quilters will no doubt be inspired by Loughman's simple but thorough instructions - as well as the impressive photo gallery of her students' work - while more advanced practitioners may find a new technique to incorporate into their own work. -- Quilting Arts Magazine, June 1, 2010 ―
Quilting Arts Magazine

Gloria's introduction to the principles and elements of design and her demonstrations of ways in which representational pictures can be abstracted are a wonderful preface to her instructions on drawing out an abstracted design, preparing the fabric and constructing the final art quilt. Machine applique and quilting plays an important part in creating texture and visual interest in the quilt and several options are explored. Four projects using Gloria's techniques, complete with patterns, are included to get you started on your way. -- Machine Quilting Unlimited, July 1, 2010 ―
Machine Quilting Unlimited

Open Gloria's book and you could very well lose yourself in the to-die-for colors and designs of her Glori-ous creations.. But in case you decide you do want to make one of these babies, this award-winning Aussie art quilter gives you all the info you need to birth your own masterpiece. Working with applique, piecing, embellishments and more, she'll take you through some pretty darn complex designs and break each down into simpler parts.. Oh and there are four full-size patterns on the book's insert, making this worth the larger price tag. Should you buy this book? Pop for it. You'll learn about color, balance, shape and form without ever reading a word. -- Quilter's Home, August1, 2010

Integrate your own drawings, doodles, or photographs with the elements and principles of design to produce eye-catching art quilts. Gloria's step-by-step instructions are thorough and concise in this beautiful book. -- . ―
American Quilter

If you've ever seen Gloria Loughman's award-winning quilts and wanted to know how she was able to create such wonderful art, you are in for a treat with her book. She goes through the basics of design and composition and color and then focuses on the construction process step-by-step. She covers appliqué, piecing and embellishments, including painting, beading and stitching options. The book also includes four projects and a gallery of student work. I found myself so engaged by the book that I was torn between wanting to look/read more or getting right to my fabric. This is a definite keeper!

Gloria Loughman lives in Kerang, a small Australian town famous for its duck shooting and ibis rookery. She is married and has three daughters. Gloria trained as a secondary school teacher and worked mainly in literacy and special education faculties. Her initiation into the world of patchwork occurred approximately sixteen years ago, when she was recovering from a rugged course of chemotherapy.

Over the years she has dabbled in many areas including strip piecing, bargello, colorwash, fabric dyeing and painting, and machine embroidery. After completing studies in design and color as part of a Diploma of Art in 1996, she began to make her large vivid landscape quilts depicting the Australian bush. These quilts have won many major awards in Australia, Europe, Japan, and the United States. Her quilt Kimberley Mystique was the winner of Australia's most prestigious national quilting award in 2003.

Gloria loves sharing her knowledge and skills with others. She likes to challenge her students to design their own landscape quilts but is also happy to provide patterns. Many students come back for a second or third class.

As well as being in demand as a teacher, Gloria has curated six exhibitions of Australian quilts to the United States and has had the privilege of judging at many major shows. Her work has been featured in many books and magazines.

What began as a therapy has developed into a passion and has given Gloria the opportunity to travel the world exhibiting her quilts, teaching classes, and meeting lots of wonderful people.

What a great book. The author truly covers the subject and goes into great detail regarding color design and techniques. While teaching you how to create your own art there are also patterns to get you going. I could barely put the book down and was consumed by a need to get into my workroom, clear the table and 'play'. Possibly one of the best quilt books i have ever read. Totally inspired to have a go.

On occasion, Gloria Loughman's books would pop up for me as a 'suggested buy.' I would see titles like "Radiant Landscapes" or "Luminous Landscapes" and I would think--meh. I'm not particularly interested in making art quilts featuring landscapes, so I'd move on. Then "Quilted Symphony--A Fusion of Fabric, Texture, and Design" was suggested. With its focus on abstract work, I was immediately sucked in. I'm so glad I made this purchase!

Aside from the obvious beauty of Gloria's work sprinkled throughout, the strength of this book really lies in its very clear, very concise description of her design and construction techniques. Gloria uses a mixture of applique, piecing (including foundation piecing), and a variety of surface embellishments to create amazing art quilts. Her detailed description of how to use tear away stabilizers and freezer paper in the invisible applique process is worth its weight in gold. Other art quilters like Caryl Bryer Fallert and Barbara Olson employ similar techniques--but neither have provided me with as clear an explanation of how it all works. Gloria's process documentation actually inspired me to order up a roll of tear away stabilizer in anticipation of putting her techniques into action!

The balance of the book focuses on the usual topics of composition, design elements, color, and so on. Helpful--but nothing that hasn't been presented dozens of times over by other art quilters, artists, and so on. The final section is devoted to presenting four projects (including pattern templates) to replicate the beautiful works found in the book. While I would prefer to dive right in and create an original work, it is comforting to know that Gloria's patterns could be used as a fall back.

All in all--a great book!

I received this book from Amazon right before our family left to a weekend retreat at the cabin (no sewing machine). I read it cover to cover and couldn't wait to get started when I got home. Some of the techniques were new to me so it was a lot of fun to try out some innovative ways to bring the fabric together. I made the smallest sampler first to learn the techniques. Then I ventured out and made a table runner 70" x 17". It uses many of the ideas from project 2. It is stunning and I can't believe that I made it. I love the way you can join pieces by sewing them together from the front with the blind hem stitch. My blind hem was messy in places so I couched some gorgeous yarns and ribbons between the pieces to hide my stitch line and what a great addition. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

I'm not a quilter, but was attracted to this book because of the cover design. I found the part on choosing colors very helpful (regardless of the medium) and was one of the reasons I purchased the book.

I love this book for how the author helps the less-than-artistic of us develop techniques to make original quilts using accessible construstion and design. It's not often that I read a quilting book cover to cover; usually I look at the pictures and read a little here and there. But with this book I read every word. There are many, many helpful pictures; the section on colour shows many different combinations, which are very inspiring. With one or two exceptions, I found the instructions easy to follow (and it was my own assumptions rather than a literal interpretation of the instructions that caused the problem).

This is a fantastic book. I have quite a collection of books about design and fabric manipulation techniques. They have all been helpful, but this author best combines everything in one place and yet has enough detail for you to be able to master techniques. Detailed pictures of each step. Beautiful examples, but shows you how to develop your own ideas in a pretty simple way (which, however, look very complicated) Great for a beginner, but also great for a more experienced quilter, fabric painter, and dyer. Wish this had been my first quilt design book!

This book has made me so excited to start quilting again. I have been too ill for some time to even sit at a sewing machine, but in the past few days I have been able to stand and do some light design and fusing for about 30 minutes at a time. I have so many ideas I don't know which to do first!! Gloria's book has sparked ideas in using color, patterns and texture in ways I hadn't thought of before. I love the possibilities I see with fussy cutting a design from one fabric to enhance another fabric. I just wish I could work as fast as my ideas come. At least when I can't stand and fuse, or sit and sew, I can page through her book and dream.

This is great book full of the award winning quilts of Gloria Loughman. I was lucky enough to do a workshop with Gloria based on her techniques and the book complements the workshop. However the book is so detailed that each and every technique is simply explained in the book with lots of illustrations to demonstrate the steps of construction. There are also 4 projects to do with step by step instructions. I also love the student gallery section where Gloria's techniques are interpreted by others. It is a beautiful book to look at and inspiring for all the quilters out there to expand their creative side .

Wow! so much more than another quilting book. This book doesn't tell you how to make bog standard quilts from blocks of fabric. This book shows you how to basically paint a picture be it abstract, mosaic or simple applique with fabric. The writer takes you through design elements and principles in a straight forward and mercifully brief way. I don't know about you but as a practical person I want to get on with it and not spend hours wading through reams of blather! She tells where to look for inspiration and supplies gloriously colourful photo's of some of her personal inspiration. She covers colour, drawing your design, preparation of the base, making and decorating segments, invisible applique, beads and braids, painting fabric, stitching options, borders, bindings and more. There are four projects and all are written simply with photographs and step by step instructions. Requirements for each project are listed clearly and there are pull out patterns at the back of the book. I previously found quilting boring - not any more! What I also liked about this book is that the author shares her very personal route into quilting. Many women will empathise deeply with her if they too had cancer.
