More than 12,000 men have pitched in the major leagues, but only a score have recorded 300 or more wins. Westcott has produced concise profiles of the tremendous 20, beginning with Pud Galvin, who recorded his milestone win in 1888. Among the careers he examines are those of such early-days icons as Cy Young (who recorded an unreachable 511 wins) and Walter "Big Train" Johnson, who amassed 416 victories. Modern-era hurlers who will be of particular interest include Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, and Nolan Ryan. Westcott provides all the key stats as well as details regarding pitching style, other career milestones, and the players' lives, pre- and postbaseball. He also includes the box score of every three-hundredth win. In the final chapter, Westcott looks ahead, concluding that, given the game's current emphasis on relief pitching, the 300-win milestone may never again be achieved.
