If you are living a spiritual life, it is inevitable that one day you will be plunged into darkness, what Saint John of the Cross described as the "dark night of the soul." Through the ages, every mystic has experienced this interior trial. What of today's mystics, who seek the divine while holding down jobs and caring for their families?

On
Spiritual Madness, Caroline Myss describes a path for the modern mystic, a way open to people from all walks of life who seek the first step toward true mystical experience. Mystics of past ages, Myss begins, generally retreated from society. In solitude they sought to achieve freedom from the self and unity with God through prayer and meditation. Today, spiritual seekers are faced with conflicts no monk ever faced, leading to a dark night unique to our age. This deep and rich madness is an inescapable part of the contemporary mystical journey.

Join Caroline Myss as she uncovers the roots of mystical experience, both ancient and modern, and reveals:

The true reason we invite God into our lives
• Why spiritual intimacy can lead to chaos in our personal world
• Four questions crucial to your spiritual direction that therapists never ask
• How mystical experience translates into everyday life in our time
• The truth about spiritual powers such as clairvoyance, healing, and bi-locating
• A way to end spiritual confusion with a simple, honest prayer
• Many self-teaching exercises and practices for daily life
Spiritual Madness is a unique and daring session that reaches to the borderland of spiritual experience, where the inner mysteries of the divine are fully opened in the outer world of career and family.

Caroline M. Myss ' Biography

Caroline is dedicated to creating educational programs in the field of human consciousness, spiritually and mysticism, health, energy medicine, and advancing the science of medical intuition. She established CMED, her own educational institute, in 2003, which offers two programs running three courses per year, on Sacred Contracts and Mysticism. Additionally, Caroline maintains a rigorous workshop and lecture schedule internationally and continues a consultation practice with physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other health practitioners, as a medical intuitive.

In 1996, Caroline compiled her years of research in medical intuition with her work in the field of human consciousness, releasing the book, ANATOMY OF THE SPIRIT. This book became a New York Times bestseller and has been published in 18 languages. To date, it has sold over 1.5 million copies.

In investigating the underlying reasons why people sabotage their healing processes, Caroline identified a syndrome as 'woundology', characterized by a person who prefers to rely upon the power of illness for manipulation of his or her world as opposed to attained an independent, empowered state of health. As with her other ground-breaking research, this syndrome is now a recognized psychological condition. Her work in this area became the subject of her fourth book, WHY PEOPLE DON'T HEAL and HOW THEY CAN. This book was Caroline's second New York Times bestseller.

Caroline released her fifth book, SACRED CONTRACTS, which became her third New York Times bestseller. As with her previous books, this one is also in 18 languages and reports sales of well over 1.6 million.

Due to the interest generated by her work in Sacred Contracts, in 2003, Caroline opened CMED (Caroline Myss Education), her own educational institute. CMED offers two programs per year, each three sessions long. The first is on Sacred Contracts and the second is on Mysticism, Intuition, and Healing. The Institute draws students from nineteen nations, as well as across the United States.

In 2004, Caroline released her sixth book, INVISIBLE ACTS OF POWER, which also became a New York Times bestseller. She is now working on her seventh book: ENTERING THE CASTLE. She has also just published her first book through her company, CMED, entitled, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, an extraordinary piece of literature that was channeled sixty years ago by a nearly-blind woman named Edith Ellis. Myss considers this project to be a vital part of her commitment to support an archive of information on her personal passion, which is the mystical history of America.

Through the years of her career, Caroline has taught in thirty-five countries, continuing her international work at present. In addition to writing six books, Caroline is the leading recording artist for Sounds True, Inc., the major audio recording company in the holistic field. She has recorded with them since 1990, producing 30 different titles. Her entire library of recordings now number of 180.

In 2003, Oprah Winfrey gave Caroline her own television program for one year with the OXYGEN network in New York City, which ran successfully for one year.

BOARD MEMBERSHIPS

From 1999-2004, Caroline served on the Board of the State of the World Forum with Jim Garrison.

She is presently on the Board of Wisdom University, San Francisco, where she also Chairs the Department of Energy Medicine and the Healing Arts.

In 1995, Myss, along with C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D., founded the American Board of Scientific Medical Intuition.

CMED Institute

In 2003, Myss founded her own educational institute, CMED (Caroline Myss EDucation), providing seminars in Sacred Contracts and Mysticism and Intuition for students from all over the world. More information on her institute is available on her web site: www.myss.com.

This was my first introduction to Dr. Caroline Myss many years ago. I was still spring-green young and as yet unvisited by anything anywhere close to a “dark night of the soul”, but her manner of delivering deep truths struck me in a resonating, lasting way. I actually ruminated over having not suffered enough when I heard this, HAHAHAHA!!!! It is so funny to me now, in a good joyful way. It still cracks me up, of all the problems to think you have!!! I had only to wait a little while for my ‘major soul growth’ opportunities to begin, and oh boy did they just keep on coming, Ha! I need to revisit this work, it is extremely important, sage advice. Perhaps, I will know better what to do with it now, at least I hope so.The content, rhythm and tone of this recording is balanced and highly charged with healing energy and information, in my opinion. Listen to it, share it with friends and family. I heard it from a friend back in the day, on cassette tape!! She Knows Stuff, and is especially adept at getting it through to folks who are only halfway listening. I consider this to be a classic among soul growth/spiritual teaching works. Not that I’m an expert! I just really, really love her style, especially here. Recommended!

I am on my second listening because the first was when I was in the dark night and I was drifting - but this lecture helped me move through my dark night by giving me insights and encouragement. I love when she says "The moment I can trust chaos, I see God clearly." I understand that and it is an indescribable comfort to me. I typed it on a sheet of clear labels and have put one in my journal and one in a prominent place at home and my desk at work to remind me. I am grateful to Ms. Myss for offering this to everyone and I hope she plans to record more of her lectures.

Carolyn Myss is certainly one of the leading Spiritual Teachers of the day and Spiritual Madness gives insight for those going deeper on their Soul's Journey; and it gives an idea of what to expect when one does experience the Dark Night. At times she does come across a bit over the top on the need to suffer and suffer some more, plus a bit repetitive regarding all the different journals one should keep and also her constant use of the phrase "If I was your Spiritual Adivsor", but these are really nits. The bottom line is, if you are one who likes hearing it as it is, e.g. in your face real world Spiritual Guidance, this is well worth it. I teach a class called "Practical Mysticism" and her work is included, as it does force the students to be honest and real with their path.

I have complete respect for Myss, and this tape is an absolute winner in my book. She makes it clear that this journey isn't easy, but that God's with us when the going gets rough. She explains things to me in a way that allows me to see clearly and put the fear aside and trudge forward into that darkness, which is where I meet myself.

Don't miss this. If you have ever had a discontent thought about anything going on in your life, if you are edgy, unhappy, or lost - read this book (or listen to the tape). You will receive validation that can help you get off your duff and do something worthwhile for yourself.
And if you like this book - you've got to get everything by Carolyn Myss. She is fabulous, funny, practical, and doesn't pull her punches. You can "hear" her as clear as a bell. She'll be your best "book on tape" buddy if you want to change your life!
Happy Reading.

A really enlightening way to look at the dark times we may walk through. Her teaching expanded my faith and understanding. I highly recommend this is you are going through a tough period, or if you just want to look at God through a broader perspective.

Only disc two was in the case

I have been asked to review 'Spiritual Madness' spoken by a woman named Caroline Myss, Ph.D. Those of you who have read my other reviews know that I tend to take a somewhat offbeat approach, and this one will be no different. Firstly, I will not read any reviews by anyone else until my own is finished, if then. This is not arrogance; I just don't want to have my own thoughts corrupted by other people's opinions. Secondly, since I am reviewing the audiocassette tapes of Dr. Myss' lecture, I have decided to review each side of the two volume cassette recording before moving on to the next side or cassette.

Thus we find ourselves, you and I, dear RR (which as some of you know stands for Review Reader, while others will believe it means Reluctant Reader) at the end of Volume A, side 1. My first impression for what it is worth is that Ms. Myss is full of poop [clearly Amazon may choose to delete that little word; I just hope they don't delete the entire review]. By this, I mean she does not have an inkling of what she's talking about. By looking at the box, I see 'Spiritual Madness' came to exist in 1997; it will soon be a teenager. Remember those teenage years when our hormones ran rampant and controlled us so very much? I feel Volume A, side 1 is out of control. By this I mean that Caroline simply does not know -- and that is the operative word -- her subject matter. She makes assumptions about us, the listeners who to remain 'appropriate' must be silent in that great lecture hall except for brief laughter in appreciation of the good doctor's wit, assumptions that quite frankly are ludicrous. She asks how we talk to God, what we pray for, what kind of response do we expect, and then she proceeds to answer these questions herself rather than calling on members of the audience to provide Real Answers. Yet these questions she frames are by no means rhetorical. They suggest that Dr. Myss really does not know the people listening to her, and in an even more horrible sense, that she really doesn't care that much who is listening, as long as she is allowed to say her piece. This is critical. I am writing this review because I experienced an epiphany (though only God knows why I was chosen of course). Through that epiphany I learned in the blink of an eye that God exists -- and that He embraced me with His Love. These became the facts, not beliefs, underpinning my very existence. So when sweet Caroline assumes the way I pray is only to ask God for material goods, well, truly she is full of poo. Since I am by no means a unique individual on this earth, I would have to assume many if not all of Caroline's audience have had their own spiritual experiences; otherwise why aren't they home watching TV? So Volume A, side 1, just doesn't fly. Dr. Myss often makes the statement 'What if I were your spiritual director? What would I ask you to do, etc?' How does this woman make the ridiculous assumption she could be mine or anyone else's spiritual director? From what I've heard so far, she is the one in need of a spiritual director and not her audience. Okay, thus endeth my quickie review of side 1. We're not off to a good start. Let's pray side 2 or the other cassette gets better. I'll be picking this up again after listening to that next side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Madness Changed My Life!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 5, 2010
I have listened to these CD's so many times I've lost count, and yet each time I hear something new, refreshing and inspiring. Caroline's teachings are timeless and yet targeted at modern day living and how one can live out the mystic call in modern life. She is both challenging and inspiring, blunt and profound. She cuts through to the heart of spiritual enquiry in the modern age, exploring its relationship with the self-help and personal development movement in a way that I have heard few people do. She provides a framework for inner enquiry which takes us beyond ego concerns and into the realm of the divine, using her profound insight alongside humour and straight talk, as only Caroline Myss can do. I have bought these CD's for several people, all of whom have been blown away by the teachings contained in them, and I would heartily recommend them for anyone who is looking to be both challenged and inspired on their journey to oneness. If, however, you're looking for platitudes and 'feel-good' encouragement, you may be disappointed. These are weighty teachings and not for the faint hearted!

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 25, 2009
My first taste of Caroline Myss. I'm glad a bought this as the dark night is an important subject for any aspiring mystic. It's worth a listen, but not one of my favourites - although my main reason for buying this was having a dream that contained the image on the album cover (so maybe I still have something to learn from this work!).
